5 story tenement in existence today?
Hi,
Hoping for a little luck, I had family that lived in 580 e. 137 st, bronx back in the 1930's and beyond. Trouble is I am researching the era and not having luck locating the building or schools they may have went to through the 1930's, if anyone out there can point me to the direction of dept.s for this information, that would be a great help. Thanx

Looks like it's been rebuilt as a city-owned development. NYC Dept. of Bldgs.
By manipulating the Street View photo on Google Maps to see the other side of the street, you probably get an idea of what it looked like when your relatives lived there. 580 E 137th St, Bronx, NY 10454, USA - Google Maps
I don't have any idea how to determine what schools they may have attended. The district lines were probably quite different 70-80 years ago than they are today. Unless you can find schools going back to that era that are very close to the address, it might be a difficult search.

It probably burned down in the 70's like so many buildings in the south Bronx.

There are still plenty of tenements though throughout the Bronx especially...many have been renovated..and many have not! You can still wander through many Bronx neighborhoods and see rows and blocks of tenements...it's literally like walking back in time.

so true, and it's a shame so many people have no choice but to live in these sub standard buildings.

Thank you Carbro, appreciate the time, what a shame the city has put those historic buildings through, I was hoping to find the building standing through time, anyways thanks again.

I guess you can use Google Earth to find the building. Well, you'd on;y be able to see the roof, but you should be able to tell if it is still an tenement or if it an empty lot or housing project or whatever.

We've established that the building no longer exists, that the property is now a city-owned housing project built in the 1950s.
Did you try the link in post #2? You can see the block from street level on Google Maps by clicking "street view." It's a fascinating function!
