Questions about Transit from Newark to NY
Hi, me and my wife are planning a weekend getaway to the Big Apple for the very first time. We will be landing at Newark Internatonal Airport on Saturday. We will stay in a hotel around the airport because of affordability. I do know that there is a train from the airport that takes you to Penn Station and vice-versa but my questions is in regards to safety. Is it safe? Is it safe at night? Is it 24 hours? How much can we expect to spend getting back and forth and is there an even cheaper and easier way than that? Also I wanted to know of any suggestions you might have for affordable touristy things to do while we are there. Thanks!!

Its the PATH train - It cost 2$ one-way, pretty safe and runs frequently.

the airport area is NOT easily accessable to public transport, you may want to reconsider your choice of hotels.

you cannot access the station from outside the airport terminals, so even if you are staying in the hotel in the airport it is a major PIA to get to the terminals, then it costs about $5.00 + PP for the train to directly to NYC, it isn't cost effective or time effective to switch to PATH, unless you are going to lower Manhattan. your waste of time will diminish the time you have to spend in NYC, and time spent waiting and traveling is not the most pleasant way to spend time, so the few bucks more you'll spend to be in manhattan will be worth it

Well the hotel I was thinking of staying in Newark (The Holiday Inn) claim that the NJ Transit train would take me to lower Manhatten for $7 a peice. Would the rest of the city be easily accessible from Lower Manhatten? Me and my wife are young and dont mind walking and seeing the sights on foot. I just cant afford the Manhatten Hotel prices.

they are not quite right, the NJT train runs into penn sta NY, which is 33 st, not lower manhattan, you could get off the train at penn sta newark and take a path train to lower manhattan. the issue still remains that the ONLY access to the station is via the airport terminals, I guess they forget to mention that. You seem to be hell bent on sticking to your plans, have fun on the rails.
That hotel in newark is in a real sketchy area, do not think you're going out for a stroll there, and if you're paying anymore than 150 a night you're being penny wise and pound foolish, with a little leg work on your part you could find a room in manhattan for 189 or so a night
