I don't know where in ENY you speak of but there is an area called Cypress Hills. It isn't really ENY but people still refer to it as such. It is pass Atlantic Avenue going toward Jamaica and there is a medium-sized park called Highland Park. There is also Highland Boulevard which has homes cost 1M and up. You can go up there and see most of Brooklyn. A couple of councilmen live up there in huge homes. The area is known as Cypress Hills and Highland. There is also another area which people refer to as ENY but it is really Spring Creek and it is past Linden Boulevard. It could be one of these two areas that the school has in mind, albeit the Highland is all residential as far as I know and I am not sure about Spring Creek. Both these areas are walking distance or a 5 minute car ride to Queens. They are right at the border.

ENY is big and I think what a lot of people are referring to is that Sutter and Blake and Livonia and Pitkin Avenue Area. Where you got off was the bus and the train station and you were closer to Jamaica Avenue and Atlantic Avenue, that is why you didn't feel intimidated. Of course you won't see anything nice at the bus and train station but if you had gone down Jamaica Avenue, you would have seen the difference of that area as opposed to the ones I mentioned before.
