I will be graduating from LPN School, and will return to RN School once I move. I live in the Memphis, TN area and have a 13 year old daughter and a 20 year old in need of different scenery! I was looking online and Brick NJ And Amherst, NY was listed as the top safest cities in the U.S. (Side note-Memphis is the 8th Most Dangerous!!!) I was looking for any input from nurses in the NY area. I have looked online, but I really want to hear from people in the profession. A recruiter can only tell you so much Thanks in advance for any help....

She is in college in Georgia, but when I move she wants to go to grad school in the New York area. I am hoping that the school recruiters can point me in the right direction job wise. I am excited about the move, but I am really nervous too. Thanks for you quick response!!! Are you a nurse?

NYC has many areas worse than what you would find in Memphis. Be sure to avoid the ghettos or your safe city fantasy will turn into a nightmare.

depending on how much you make, you may not be able to afford the trendy areas

so really your quality of life will depend on how much you make

how is your daughter gonna pay for grad school, it is not cheap?

LPNs, as you know, are not in as high a demand as RNs, so you really need to think about this big step. You might not make all that much as an LPN and might want to consider staying in Memphis until you have your RN.

Graduate school, depending on the area of study, isn't a big deal: I never paid a cent for graduate school, as I got my tuition during my Ph.D. essentially gratis and earned money by teaching undergraduates.

Amherst, NY is a suburb of Buffalo NY. There are 2 state universities in Buffalo and other private colleges and universities. You may want to post on the Buffalo forum to get more information. The cost of living is much cheaper up there. The weather and lifestyle is different from the NYC area.

Just curious why you want to come to New York. You have a career that offers you the luxury of many choices on where to live. Is it the faster-paced nature of NYC hospitals that attracts you?

Using Hunts Point as an example. Newark, NJ is one of the worst cities in the US in terms of crime. Well, somebody compared Newarks worst central ward (precinct) with Hunts Point ....and aside from homicides , Hunts Point had robberies, assaults, grand larceny, rape, burglary, and GLA rates ALOT higher than that of Newark. Newark NJ ranked 3rd in the entire US in terms of crime. So if it can beat the 3rd highest crime city in the US, parts of BK, BX can certainly beat the 8th.

If you want to see the stats...ask and I'll look for them.
