The average salary in NYC is $42,000...so as a nurse if you can make at least that amount, then I think you can live here. The question is...how do you describe "make it?"

Also, pay and benefits depends upon the type of nurse. Some hospitals have subsidized housing for nurses with bachelors or masters degrees from top nursing programs.

Nurses, RNs, are in high demand. Likely you'll not get the best shifts, but you'll be paid well. Some hospitals have flexible shifts ( 4 x 10h or 3 x 12, depending on the hospital) but nurses, especially with unit experience and willing to take the graveyard shifts, are always needed. RNs make WAY more than $40,000/year.

I just started working as an RN and my starting salary is 75,000 a year, good benefits too. And working three days a week gives you time to do other things. As an experienced nurse you can make a lot more and if you do overtime, you can make a couple hundred thousand a year but you can probably forget about a social life then!

Yeah seriously..an RN makes WAY more than 42k a year. What are you smoking crack or something?
You will make it as an LPN or RN. If you're an LPN you better be good with your money though because they make $16-26/hr to start..and that's enough to support yourself.. but you can't blow money like an RN making 70-80k can.
BTW..to the girl making 75k...did you get your Associates or Bachelors? Just curious. I know Nursing is a TOUGH degree that not many people can do but I heard that if you get your AA you can make BIG money with that even. Good luck

Maddie your in luck! Nurses in NYC make 70k starting 75 with O.T. That is the LEAST you should be working for in the finer hospitals such as Mt Sinai, NYP, NYHQ and of course MSK hospital (hospital for cancer patients..) I know this because I am currently in college and was interested in nursing so i checked out the allnurses.com forum and they post their regional salaries there. As of right now MSK hospital makes the most starting.

here is the thread.
Name the hospital and its Starting Salary!!! - 14th Oct, 10:17 PM - Nursing for Nurses

Best of luck to you and thanks for your service!

edit: nurses with a.s and b.a make same starting here (maybe $5-$10 diff per hour)
