Looking At The Bronx
Hello. I am planning on moving to NYC area from San Diego and considering the Bronx. I'm moving for a job which is actually going to be in Port Chester near Rye. I lived in Queens and worked in Manhattan for a few years before coming out to California. I'm considering the Bronx because I still want to be able to take the subway to the city and to see friends in Brooklyn, and I don't really want to live in Westchester. Long story short, I'm looking for something safe and affordable. I lived in Woodside Queens and I'm looking for something similar to the Sunnyside/Woodside/Jackson Heights area only in the Bronx. I'm single, 30, white, male, no kids, like to get out every now and then but don't need a rousing nightlife outside at my front door if you know what I mean. Looking for a one-bedroom around $1000/month.

Offhand, you might try any of these Bronx neighborhoods: Woodlawn, Bedford Park, Pelham Bay, Morris Park, City Island. They've all got direct access to subway lines except City Island (that requires a bus-to-subway transfer). A lot of people might also say Riverdale, but something tells me that's going to be on the expensive side.

In the Bronx, I would consider Riverdale and Woodlawn, since they both start at the Westchester-Bronx line. Both offer transportation options to Port Chester and the rest of the city. Riverdale has the Henry Hudson Parkway which can be an easy way to get into and through lower Westchester and on to Port Cester. Plus, parking is not as tight as in other areas of the city, and you can find street parking or parking in many of the apartment buildings. Rents near $1000 a month are not impossible in Riverdale, but it is a neighborhood where it is not uncommon to spend a lot more in rent. Riverdale also has the benefit of parks along the Hudson River, with great views to the Palisades and a good selection of restaurants and conveniences. The subway does not go through Riverdale, however, it is on Broadway and in Spuyten Duyvil and other sections of South Riverdale, it can be a hike to get there, or you can take a city bus down the hill.
Woodlawn is also a nice section of the borough and offers proximity to Westchester. It's across Van Cortlandt Park from part of Riverdale and has more of a night life with pubs and bars than you will find in Riverdale. It's a very Irish area, with a lot of new emigrees, and is a bit younger and a little less posh than Riverdale.
Some of the streets in Kingsbridge, down the hill from Riverdale and West of Broadway, have some decent places, but one needs to be a little more judicious in this area as there's a mix of housing types, including public housing in Marble Hill which borders this district on the South. Marble Hill is technically Manhattan, but is joined to the mainland of the Bronx due to a channel that was put through the river at this point. Marble Hill is at W230th and Broadway and runs South on both sides of Broadway for a few blocks.
At the upper end of the subway on Broadway, near Van Cortlandt Park, you are actually touching a portion of Riverdale, and these neighborhoods are pretty decent. Parking can be a little more difficult in this part of Riverdale, though, not at plentiful as in the southern and central Riverdale. Manhattan College is also nearby, and there are pubs and bars in this area and along Broadway. You can also easily pick up the Henry Hudson Parkway or the Deegan Expressway in this neighborhood to travel to Westchester.

The above mentioned nabes are good. I think Bedford Park, and Pelham Bay are probably the best fits in terms of what you are looking for. I'm not so sure about Morris Park, because the times I've been there, it seems a little far from the train.
Woodlawn can be a little hard to get into (as in finding a place there) from what I've heard unless your Irish, again just what I've heard.
City Island is not a good choice. It's far, inconvenient, and its tiny. Nice place to visit though.

So you're looking for Woodside or Sunnyside in the Bronx?
I think the closest thing would be Pelham Bay. You have the 6 train that runs right through the neighborhood. There is a nice little strip around the Buhre Ave station stop. Its a decent neighborhood that is pretty safe and has a decent ammount of stuff to do. There are a lot of shops, Italian restaurants, and a couple of bars.
Most importantly Pelham Bay is right next to 95 so you can hop right on there and drive straight to Port Chester. (The only drawback in the toll on I-95 around New Rochelle. I believe it is $1.50???)
EDIT: The only other thought I have is that taking the subway from anywhere in the Bronx all the way down to Brooklyn is going to suck. Its going to take forever to get down there, even under the best of circumstances. Driving won't be any easier as the roads are nearly always jammed.

Also why hasn't Parkchester been mentioned (I guess because its nothing like the Queens nabes mentioned)? Rents are pretty affordable there and the 6 train is right there, well if you live in the southern part of the complex.

Yes I would agree that Woodlawn and Pelham Bay are good choices for someone commuting to Westchecter..but going into the city and Brooklyn is a long way from either of these locations (you can take the MetroNOrth/Express Bus at additional expense).
You may also like Kingsbridge/Bedford Park and Parkchester as well. Parkchester is similar to stuyvesant town, a lot of apt buildings with lots of greenspace, walkable, lots of retail and restuarants, on the express train to Manhattan, an easy commute to Westchester and about 95% ethnic....I think they have a website. Kingsbridge/Bedford park is also North Bronx...fairly green, lots of apt buildings with some homes, retail, and good train service....more diverse than parkchester, but less amenities.

I suggest the Longwood section of the Bronx since it is served by THREE SUBWAY LINES!!!!!! (2, 5, and 6). If you do choose Longwood, live around Beck, Kelly, and Dawson Sts between Longwood and Leggett Avenues since they have historic brownstones. The only downside is the youth (since they have nothing to do after school).
