I think in the 70's "South bronx" was a term for the area Jimmy Carter visited, also synonymous with "east bronx".

Although "south bronx" had been defined since then as below Fordham, west of Bx River, east of Harlem River, in an emotional sense "south bronx" really meant the Hunts point, longwood, W Farms areas--the areas that had SEVERE SEVERE abandonment everywhere

I remember in 1977 my dad took us to see Findlay Ave and 170th street and monroe Ave and 173 street(Claremone park area)--the areas where my folks lived when they first married, and we saw mounds of trash and abandoned buildings. I asked my dad 'is this the 'south bronx'? and he replied--"are you kidding, I'll take you to the south bronx and i'll show you REAL disaster!!".

Yes but the South Bronx today does not connote that...it is now associated with greening, growth, investment, change, and progress. The days of the "south bronx" no longer apply....nonetheless...let's get back to topic: Bedford Park and the fact that it is a decent working/middle class enclave!

i think that BP (Concourse-Webster-Mosholu Pkwy-BPB) is a really nice looking section with cool art deco bldgs and houses; most of the streets(especially 201st near Perry and Marion) have a real sense of community pride and are exceptionally well taken care of

I agree...and I hope with the new people that are coming into Bedford Park that it will continue to improve!

Well all I know is that no one around where I live refers to the immediate area as South Bronx. They just call it whatever neighborhood they happen to be in. Fordham, Bedford Park, Uni Heights, etc. Also nobody really uses the Fordham-Bedford or North Fordham thing. People just call it Fordham, Bedford or Bedford Park.

When I think of South Bronx I always think the areas around Yankee stadium and the Hunts Point areas, but there are a lot of different opinions on this obviously.

I've heard North Fordham, but only in the Norwood News, not conversationally.

I think the Fordham-Bedford name came from the nearby housing corporation that serves many buildings in those nabes.

I think Bedford Park has the best of all worlds, a strong, stable working/middle class, great schools in the Educational Mile, beautiful buildings on or near the Concourse, and excellent public transportation (whether you're going to Manhattan, Yonkers, Riverdale, or Co-op City). Even if it includes a bunch of undesirables, I hope most of the Bronx can follow the example set by Bedford Park.
