I remember in 1977 my dad took us to see Findlay Ave and 170th street and monroe Ave and 173 street(Claremone park area)--the areas where my folks lived when they first married, and we saw mounds of trash and abandoned buildings. I asked my dad 'is this the 'south bronx'? and he replied--"are you kidding, I'll take you to the south bronx and i'll show you REAL disaster!!".

I dont see the difference between Morris Heights and Hunts Point. Both suffered arson, burned buildings, decay etc.......and if you go by the actual meaning of south Bronx (urban decay, crime, poverty) then all the neighborhoods south of Fordham rd suffered the same thing. That is why in the articles, efforts were being made to rebuild every neighborhood south of fordham rd and not just Hunts Point, Mott Haven etc......it was all the same.
Lol nice story......but how much more disaster could your dad have showed you that you didn't already see on 173rd?

Well all I know is that no one around where I live refers to the immediate area as South Bronx. They just call it whatever neighborhood they happen to be in. Fordham, Bedford Park, Uni Heights, etc. Also nobody really uses the Fordham-Bedford or North Fordham thing. People just call it Fordham, Bedford or Bedford Park.
When I think of South Bronx I always think the areas around Yankee stadium and the Hunts Point areas, but there are a lot of different opinions on this obviously.

Yeah but if you asked somebody who lived on.....lets say 184th and Davidson.....in 1979........first you'd probably find no one because the whole neighborhood was abandonded......but if you asked him, he would say I live in the south Bronx.
Back then.....neighborhoods like University Heights with its abandonement, vacant lots, crime, and arson fit the bill like other neighborhoods. The difference today is that since no neighborhood is really like that no more, no neighborhood really gets to be called south Bronx because the arson and abandonement, which was such an essential part of the term, is no longer around. People dont see the sense in using it to describe Fordham, Uni Heights, Tremont etc... as a result people now have coined the term to mean "the geographical south Bronx". Many people are uneducated and dont know the real meaning. But in reality no neighborhood fits the bill anymore but Mott Haven, Melrose, Hunts Point get called south Bronx now because they are actually in the southern Bronx. That is the only difference.
Ask any resident in the 70's what was south Bronx and you would see what I mean. This revisionist history is false and as a result people today dont know the real meaning of the term.

I agree with your point SuperMario...the South Bronx is really now just about the Mott Haven, Melrose, concourse, and Hunts Point areas, which are the geographical South Bronx and is also synonymous with all the change and investment..which now is tied to the moniker as well.

Well the south Bronx is everything under Fordham rd.
But today people only think that the Mott Haven, Morrisania, Hunts Point and Melrose area is just because of the geography.
Which is incorrect but it is what it is.
Also its still synonymous with crime and poverty.

I give it a thumbs to the right.

If you think the neighborhood is in decline just give it a thumbs down. I say a BIG thumbs up!
