Bronx: Bedford Park Article
Great article about Bedford Park in the NY Times, however they picked probably the worst picture of the area! If you click on the bottom right under the pics (it says "More Pics") you will get a better sense of the community.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/29/re...te&oref=slogin
My summary:
-Prices are stable, and affordability continues to be the draw. Diverse housing stock of large, old homes, co-ops.
-Area is stable and diverse 58% Hispanic, 17% white, 13% black, 7% Asian.
-Transplants are typically from elsewhere in the Bronx and northern Manhattan, and recently an uptick from Brooklynites relocating as well. Lots of old timers still around.
-Lots of greenery, including mosholu, van courtland park, and Botanical Gardens.
-Good transportation on the D/B and MetroNorth stop by Botanical Gardens.
-The armory redevelopment will add alot and likely spur more retail and amenities.
Overall I like the value and greenery of Bedford Park, as well as the old homes. It is great to be on the B/D and also have access to the MetroNorth. The main shopping strip though is still in a time warp, but I think the newbies moving in and the redevelopment of the armory will spur good changes going forward.

Don't forget the 4 line stop at Lehman...you have East side access as well...You can commute to anywhere in the City or Westchester/Conn quite easily.

Yeah but you're only a few blocks from total crap. Even in Bedford park proper there are some sketchy blocks.

Lol...I was wondering what took you so long. We live in NYC..you are never more than a few blocks away from crap! Nonetheless, what you get for the money in Bedford Park is darn good...and the area is getting some pretty good amenities via the Armory..and hopefully more will follow shortly.

Depends what part of Manhattan..it is definitely longer than living in Mott Haven (South Bronx area), however the trip is easy via the 4/B/D or even the Metro-North. I would recommend taking a stroll...best to go with someone who knows the area though. If not..just walk around, have a cup of coffee..and see the area..worst case scenario you hate it and just head straight to the Bronx Zoo or Botanical Gardens.

First the armory is Kingsbridge Heights not Bedford Park.
Second your first statement is false. If you live in the UES, UWS, Bayside, Riverdale, Park Slope etc then you are more than a few blocks from crap. You are sorrounded by nice areas. Unlike Mott Haven for example, where you are engulfed by bad areas.

The Armory is within walking distance of Bedford Park, which is good enough for me. I walk down to Fordham Rd. for the Gap, Children's Place etc., but I'm looking forward to more choices. I wonder what the department store will be. I'd hope for a Target, but that's already taken in Marble Hill.
It takes about 25 min. to get to 59th St. at rush hour on the D--longer at other times when the train runs local. I'm not sure how long the 4 takes. MTA has a trip planner which is helpful. The good thing about the D and 4 is that they take you pretty much wherever you want to go in Manhattan. Some lines from Queens and Brooklyn take you to limited locations (like the 7 and L for example) and then you have to switch trains. The metro north is about 20 minutes to Grand Central, but I really only take that on the weekends with the City Ticket, at other times I find it too expensive.
Guy: I also thought they could have picked better photos.
