Where else????
Hi All,
Where else, nice, is there to live other than Queens? I would love to move to Manhattan, not because of the craze but because of my profession in the medical field. I don't want to make this a racial debate..but based on my background (I'm white and 1/4 mexican) where would I fit in? I have been mistaken consistently with being colombian (see profile pic) but I feel more "white" if you will. I like certain hispanic neighborhoods but I don't always feel that they are completely "accepting". I heard of a place called Sugar Hill. It's supposed to be up and coming. Any advice anyone?
I'm looking to pay under $2000 for a one bedroom or studio. I know I can't live anywhere in manhattan with that budget, but I do know there are places. I'm trying to find somewhere where I don't have to worry about women-related crimes. Do you get me?

I would have guessed you were PuertoRican looking at your pic. But maybe you look Colombian in person.
The only Sugar Hill I know of is the one in Manhattan. That's kinda where Harlem ends and Wash Heights starts.
Don't worry so much about "fitting in." That would be my advice. If you like a neighborhood, its safe, and it fits your budget, just go with it.

That's exactly what I'm trying to find. Somewhere that is decently safe, within my budget, and that I like. I'm not super picky. Living in Corona doesn't feel very diverse though. Love myself some latin food, but it's making me fat as hell and they don't sell other types at their gorcery store...no diet food..not a wide selection. LOL. On top of that a lot of people don't speak english which makes things a little harder on me and the rudeness that I get from them for not speaking Spanish has gotten pretty annoying. I don't mind living in an indian, asian, black, white, purple, red, or pink neighborhood, I just want to be able to walk around during the day without being harassed or have guys make the kissy noises and saying "mami this and that" or trying to grab at you. That's all. I want to be able to walk around freely and independently in the neighborhood which I live. I don't really feel like that in Corona. I stand out a bit and people make that obvious. It's just too gossipy here.

Well if I look puerto rican or colombian maybe I can get by in those neighborhoods . I always felt like I stood out like a sore thumb but I guess it's because I feel "white" on the insides lol...and I barely speak spanish, my mommy never taught me. haha. Where in Brooklyn are you looking to move? If any of you guys live in other neighborhoods that are a great deal and worth it..give me suggestions..even if it's not Manhattan.

I feel you. It's hard for us assimilated Latinos here sometimes. We don't really fit into too many places unfortunately. I'm pretty fluent in Spanish so I'm able to blend in okay in most Latino neighborhoods here in NYC. But from what your describing you would probably feel more at ease in a neighborhood with more White people. What about some place like Bayside or Astoria maybe? Are you pretty much locked into Queens/Manhattan? There are some areas of the Bronx that you might like.
For what its worth I've also met a few women who sort of fit your general profile and they were living happily in Bay Ridge in Brooklyn. Don't know if that was just a coincidence. I honestly know little about Bay Ridge.

Well you are old enough to learn Spanish on your own, as being bilingual in another language is always a big plus. If you are looking for nice neighborhoods, who cares what you look like. I am from the Bronx, of course, and if you are looking to stay very close to the city in a very urban area, and one that is having massive investment and repositioning, try the Yankee Stadium area near Franz Siegel Park around Grand Concourse from 163 down to 149th or thereabouts...lots of retail, restuarants, waterfront park, greening, and housing going in, not to mention the new stadium and all the amenities that surround it.

That's the thing, I don't feel a direct need to learn Spanish. If I learn it one day, hey that's cool, but I don't feel inclined to. My reasoning as far as looking to fit in may sound silly, but we all want to be comfortable in a place where we reside, and I'm not originally from NYC- I'm from San Diego..which is why I'm asking you natives for your opinion.
NooYukr- Nope, I'm not locked into Queens, I just need something that's under $2,000 a month. That's it . I'm not set on fancy frills etc. I just want somewhere halfway decent where my Mom can visit me and not have a heart attack about my surroundings and safety lol. I know a lot of you are male and may not get my point of view..but it's a thing Mom's have with their daughters. To say the least, she isn't thrilled about me living in Corona at all and she grew up in a neighborhood much much worse herself..so it isn't about being uppity or anything
