Bronx: Historic Kingsbridge Armory Redevelopment
Just an article about recent happenings with the redevelopment of the Kingsbridge Armory.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/bu...ref=realestate
My summary:
-Beautiful, historic, landmarked building in a Romanesque style
-Community has worked hand in hand with the city and the Related Companies to craft a redevelopment that benefits the area greatly and remains true to the architecture and significance of the building.
-575,000 (!!!) sf of retail space including a department store (unknown yet), multiscreen movie theater (sorely needed), and restaurants (finally!).
-Community also seeking athletic and recreational space, space for entreprenuers, and gourmet food market.
This redevelopment is LONG overdue and will be a HUGE plus for the community and put it (back) on the map. The development will hopefully spur further development and investment in the area, and bring more people back to this solid working/middle class community.

This would be the "economic and commercial connector" between the Marble Hill-225th St (River Plaza) and Fordham shopping strips. With the Armory Shops opening, the Bx3 and 9 buses, the D and 4 trains would be busier than ever.

Yes,..but busier for a good reason! New retail and investment, new customers, revitalization of the neighborhood...this will be a great plus for the area.

The only downside is no new schools as Kingsbridge Heights have to deal with overcrowded schools on every level (Elementary, Middle, and High). But I like the idea so far. Plus, people going to the armory have a newly-renovated 4 train station at Kingsbridge Road.

I'm excited about the movie theater more than anything. The lack of movie theaters in the BX is pathetic.

Umm...I would not go to any movie thearter in the Bronx..I have tried and there are also a few that ruin it with talking, laughing, silliness that kids do. I go to jersey or westchester for the movies. Nonetheless, I will give the armory a shot and see how it goes.

I agree with you. The movie theaters in the Bronx have crappy service and tons of teenagers ruining your experience.

Bay Plaza is just plain too rowdy.
