Default is NY losing its culture?

When i think of new york i think of the small bookstore that is run by 3 generations of family members, or the many different little local ethnic restaurants, and even the quirky coffee shops. Is this still alive and kicking in new york or is it slowly dying out due to the yuppie population moving in? Are places like hells kitchen and greenwich slowly becoming mimi soho's and tribeca's? I plain to be in new york by 2015 at the latest and i really don't to come to a city that is basically Chelsea. I like those places, don't get me wrong, but i just don't want all of Manhattan to be like that.

Hells Kitchen is also known as Clinton. Its west of midtown and in between the UWS and Chelsea....Ever see Gangs of New York with Leonardo Dicaprio? Thats where the setting is suppose to be in the movie.

Well I don't live there yet so I don't know how valuable my opinion really is. I did however live there for 12 weeks last summer on an internship and am moving up there permanently in about a month.

In my ever so humble opinion I think the answer is both yes and no. There has been quite a bit of "Disneyfication" of Manhattan not to mention the Starbucks revolution. Times Square for example is a cartoon version of what it historically has been and with the exception of a few lingering adult oriented businesses the only semblance of the historic Times Square are the lights. I also found that the majority of the coffee shops to be found in New York are Starbucks or some other chain.

However with that said anyone with any motivation can find all the local gems to be found in the city. There are still plenty of locally owned businesses, restaurants, book shops, pizza parlors, pubs, cafes etc. I'm not as familiar with the other boroughs so I can't comment on what they are like.

Clinton (the old Hell's Kitchen) has been gentrified much in recent years, as has the rest of Manhattan. It's a toss up as to what constitutes progress, since neighborhood improvement in the form of decreased crime and rejuvenated housing choices does tend to spur developments that attract chains to cater to the new residents. Chelsea was not always as it is now, having gone through some very rough periods in the not too distant past, and the same is true for other areas around the city. The new neighborhood identity, however, seeks to drop any reference to Hell's Kitchen as it has been closely linked with Chelsea in recent years. There are still many local places that exist throughout the city, even if chains that cater mostly to yuppies have moved into a given neighborhood, but it is a shame when the individual character of a neighborhood loses some of its charm. Rather than walking into a neighborhood now and being able to find unique places, one must seek them out, but they do exist, even if their numbers have diminished in recent years.

Actually that is incorrect

that movie took place around the little italy, chinatown, LES border region

And to answer the OP question

Manhattan below 96th has lost all of its culture, it is a playground for spoiled rich kids

All you have left is the dominicans, puerto ricans, and blacks uptown, that will not last till 2015

So sorry it is all gone

Try Jersey, bronx or other outer boros

Thank you
