I have 4 friends who live in the LaGuardia projects in Manhattan and they all tell me they're pretty good and not dangerous. (All 4 happen to be chinese)
The Williamsburg houses in Brooklyn also seem to be pretty tame. My cousin lives right next to them and I've never had problems going to his house late at night. (there also seems to be a large hispanic population living in those, something I don't see in other projects)
My mom works in various public housing developments around the city and has told me the Smith houses in Manhattan (right next to the brooklyn bridge) are the best she's been to. She also says Carey Gardens in Coney Island aren't too bad either. The Nostrand houses are pretty good too.
As for worst, she says the Walt Whitman houses in Fort Greene, Brownsville houses and Glenmore houses in Brooklyn. And some unamed development (she can't remember the name) in the Bronx where she said she had to be in an elevator with a pile of... feces for 14+ floors. But she says she's had to pass by urine and feces in most of the projects.

A lot of the projects in the city appear to be segregated and represent their neighborhood's ethnic make up. Williamsburg has, or had when I grew up there, a large Hispanic population. All the projects in Williamsburg have a noticeable Hispanic population. Go to Bed-Stuy and you'll see that the developments there are majority Black. Go to the developments in the LES(since it borders Chinatown) and you'll see a noticeable Asian population mixed in.

It's a shame what's happened to the projects in general...I was raised in Pomonok houses in Queens and growing up, we didn't even think of it..it changed quite a bit when we moved out about 15 years ago and then we started to hear about shootings, etc. I do have to say, however, that most of the people I kept in touch with who grew up with me..got out..so...of course it's possible!

Does anyone know about the Wise Towers on the Upper West Side (btwn Columbus and Amsterdam and 90th/91st Street). They seem pretty decent my son works in the area and when I drop him off to work there's never any riff raff hanging out in front of the building like some of the other PJ's. So far The Management of Wise Towers has told me that it's pretty good over there. I would really appreciate anyone's feedback about Wise Towers.
