Just moved to Washington Heights, and I'm curious about trying out Dominican food. Most restaurants seem to cater only to fellow Dominicans... it's hard to find a menu in English! Can anyone recommend a restaurant that had great food and welcomes newcomers to Dominican food?
Malecon (check the internet for the uptown location). I believe the menu is in both English and Spanish. At Malecon I recommend the chicharrones de pollo sin hueso (fried boneless chicken) with lime.
El Malecon is the best you should try the rotesserie chicken or the mofongo they do have a English menu. There is also Caridad's restaurant there are a few in manhattan I believe they also have a English menu.

I've never tried El Malecon, but for some good chicharrones I always go to Elsa - La Reina del Chicharron. It's more of a take-out place so I don't recommend it, but they sure do make great chicharrones.
But my recommendation is Marisco Centro........the food is to die for.
I think Mariscon Centro is on St Nicholas in Between 183rd and 184th.
Marisco Centro is between 184th and 185th on St. Nick. Plus, they just opened another store on Castle Hill/Powell Avs in the Bronx (four blocks south of the 6 train station).
There's a real hole in the wall place on 159th and Broadway, called Margot Restaurant. People in the Heights always say it has the most authentic home-style food. A lot of people recommend Malecon, which is understandable, its a lot bigger and the food is very good there. But Margot has better food still.
Margot's a tiny place though and can be rather uncomfortable if it happens to be busy. Try to go during the week if you can, and before dinner time. Also if you can, try to go with someone who knows Spanish. They sometimes write the menus in English but not always.

Yup that's fantastic! For the BX people, there's one of those in the BX too on Jerome, on 183rd.
