hi, does anyone have any information on that area? i'm from harlem & i'll be moving back in the Spring of next year. i know the area has gone through its ups & down as any area in a major city does. i'm just looking for some feedback. i moved upstate but i'd much rather be in the city. i'm a nyc girl, born & raised.

Thats East Harlem (Spanish Harlem)......East Harlem is covered with projects from head to toe....and that area you're reffering to is no different. There are projects on every corner there. If your concern is safety, then I suggest you look elsewhere.
it's actually east river apartments - the mitchell lama bldg
i was born in harlem way back in the 60's when the pleasant avenue connection was going strong. i know the area well. my family owned 2 bldgs in harlem. i moved upstate & i absolutely hate it. the train is on lex & 106th st. that's not bad considering that my nearest train is 5 miles & it costs me close to $500 a month to commute. thats including my monthly commuter ticket, wkly parking & weekly metro cards. i have a friend who owns a duplex near Raos & he's been there for more than 20 yrs. yeah, it's like any other neighborhood. there's rough areas & there are areas that ok. i live in dutchess county & the local tavern down the road had more Ex & heroin & cocaine then you would even image. two yrs ago an entire family was killed up here. all drug related. a mother, father & their two little boys. then the killers set the house on fire....so believe me when i tell everyone here on this board, you can go to the butt end of the universe thinking you can get away from crime & it doesn't happen. i moved here for my hubby. he can keep dutchess county!!
i would have to disagree on that. east new york has had higher crime than all boroughs according to COMPSTAT. i'm from east harlem so if you're not from the area & you live in either the outer boroughs or the burbs then everywhere in the city that you're not familiar with will be high crime to most. i've read several of your posts here & we're all entitled to our opinions. now if i were hanging out on street corners w/gang bangers then i'd have a problem. oh & the projects on are on 1st & 104th to 106th. the mitchell lama bldgs occupy 2120 first ave. & the three surrounding bldgs. if you're not familiar w/mitchell lama they are bldgs. that offer affordable rents to ny'ers. with all of the developing that has taken place in all areas of harlem it not the crime ridden areas that they use to be. residents have had enough of living with people that bring down the neighborhoods.

I'm honestly not trying to be a douchebag with this answer, but if you know this area and the situation so well.. why exactly did you ask us for help?

You seem not very familar with compstat and precincts. East NY was most certainly not the highest crime rate area in NYC. You realize that the 75th precinct covers a huge amount of land. The population for that precinct is about 200,000. Therefore just looking at raw numbers, of course its going to look like the most. The better approach is per capita...eg per 100,000. The 23rd precinct is tiny. But the amount of crime there was extremely high. East Harlem had the highest crime rate in NYC last year. It was followed closely by Bed-Stuy.
