First, it'd be much easier to read your post if you didn't use all uppercase! It's also considered 'yelling' to use all uppercase.
Do you have a visa that enables you to work legally in the US? It's not possible for you to work on a tourist visa. So if your boyfriend is being transferred for work, you still can't work legally on a tourist visa.
Staten Island, while many consider it a nice place to live, wouldn't be a place where I'd choose to work. It's not easy to get to and even if you get the ferry, you then have to get to any workplace. Not easy.
Second Avenue is on the East side of Manhattan (please note the spelling). But it's a long avenue, extending from way down in the teens to WAY uptown. What constitutes a good place to live for a convenient commute depends on where on Second Avenue the workplace is.
We need more information. And what's your budget, please?

Don't worry - I'm sure it would be so daunting that he would type all in upper case too!
Now, based on everything else he said were you going to provide any more information so that people could have at least a shot at helping you?

I did live in the UK. And what makes everyone think I'm a male?
Again, please provide a budget - until we can see what your preferences, both in terms of money and neighborhood/commute are, it's hard to help you.

Hi there.... We are now thinking of the Brooklyn area as Statten Island seems difficult for commuting!! Our budget is $2000.00 to $2500.00 per month, we are just looking to rent to begin with. My partner will be working on 2nd Avenue/ 42nd street and is looking for the shortest commute possible within reason obviously knowing that to get cheaper rentals he will have to travel !! Any advice would be much appreciated .
Regards Jill

You'd be better off in Brooklyn or Queens than in Staten Island. Staten Island really is an island - with very limited means of getting off the island.

If he is working on 42nd and 2nd and you want to live in Staten Island, their are several Express buses that go from Staten Island to that area of the East Side. I know several people at my job commute that way. Don't know how convenient it really is but I do know that you have to be vigilant in catching it back to the Island because they do stop running at a certain time.
Personally, for your rental range and for convenience, I would look into areas in Brooklyn like Boerum Hill or Carroll Gardens. You can get to Grand Central fairly easy from those areas. Also, Riverdale in the Bronx may be good as he can catch the Metro North to Grand Central and the ride is fairly easy. Also, if he misses the last train, which is probably after midnight, he can always catch the subway.

Thank you so much for your friendly advice. We are looking for a summer rental to begin with so we can take our time in finding a more permanent apartment, have you any ideas of any good websites that deal with temporary rentals.
Thanks once again
Jill
