You're welcome. Oh, and one thing I forgot that is a plus in Croton's favor is that it tends to attract a good number of artsy people.

Don't forget that if you are going to be coming home late at night, depending on the time and if you are going to be taking a bus or Metro-North Westchester might be out.

I used to live in Harstdale and the trains would stop running at 12a or 1p. The buses a little earlier. Things might have changed but you would want to check out the transportation first.

PS,
Just my 2 cents...No one should come and live in NY unless they REALLY LOVE the city. If you BF is doing this just for you...it might cause a tear in the relationship.

when i tell him that he says he says he'd be living in a big city regardless, NY, LA, SF or chicago and that he'll deal and get used to it. i hope he does and doesn't blame me for it.... and if there is a tear and we break up, i think i'll be just fine on my own.

Just live anywhere, take Penn Station to the beach in the summer. You can get to the beaches in LI in like an hour from there.

Default I'll try not to be judgemental!

Sounds like bf really needs to live in Westchester/burbs as you'll both likely not have the income to live in an NYC area he'll be content with, and certainly not with a car. bmwguydc has good suggestions. And why take the train to the beach? You've got the darn car, might as well use it for that.

Also--does your bf know anything about urban living? As pointed out, San Francisco is virtually as bad as NYC in terms of cost of housing and keeping a car. And the beaches are FREEZING, both the weather and the water itself, year-round!

Let him run off to SF and learn this himself--oops, I went judgemental! But fascinating posts and all the best.

-- But its okay b/c i want to live with him. --

Glad to hear it. We were raising red flags because originally you were framing it like it was more convenient to live with him. And many of the posters here reacted strongly your bf's requirements simply because they are so unrealistic. He should be forewarned about city life.

If it works better for you guys, you can still be together and live separately in the same city, particularly if you have different wants and needs right now. It may even be less stress on your relationship. You can *easily* find a roommate through FIT or one of the other university's housing boards. It's a great way to meet people, too.

Good luck!

Like everyone said, there will be some trade offs but if the car is extremely important, I would steer clear of anywhere in Manhattan, downtown or central Brooklyn and a lot of the Bronx. Alternate side of the street parking is a pain, and finding parking is more of a pain. You may want to investigate Bay Ridge or Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, Riverdale in the Bronx, Bayside in Queens or Staten Island. I don't know much about Staten Island but I believe that there are some nice neighborhoods that may fit your needs. I was reading about an area called Randall Manor that seems to be nice in addition to a neighborhood called Grasmere so I would not dismiss the Island, especially if a car is wanted.

yeah. i've been warning him about what city life is like. i brought him on my last visit there, stayed overnight in my friends tiny 1 br ozone park apt, and made him drive through brooklyn and queens which is why he said he cant live there, which really means he cant drive so he wont live there. but yeah i def want to live with him and im cool with being a bit farther away, my apt is mostly for sleeping in anyways.
i think we reached an agreement that he wouldn't look for a new car until he was adjusted to the city life because he might change his mind (though my way of convincing was to say to save up for down payment, hehe im tricky), though hes still bringing the older car he has now, thats fine with me. we're gonna go down next month and drive around westchester looking for places he likes. yay.

thanks again guys, if you have any suggestions let me know. hopefully in a few months i can give people advice on here as well.
