Default Jobs for a UK cop

My husband and I are relocating from London (YAY- let's get out of here!!!) to NY and are trying to work out what kind of work there would be for him. I am a dual citizen (UK/US) so when he gets his visa, he will be a permanent resident (as opposed to a citizen). He is a police sergeant over here with 10 years experience but wouldn't be able to join the NYPD for various reasons. What other jobs would be suitable for someone with a background in law enforcement (but no degree)?

Many thanks

Since the 9/11 attacks, building security is a major issue here, and a lot of retired NYC police perform various jobs in that area.

There are a lot of opportunities in the private sector. There's private security work. Someone with your husband's background could get some very lucrative work in that area. It does help to have some connections though.

Default Hey Sahona, now may not be a great time ...

to ask the forum about bringing another cop to the city - even though NY sure needs them.

Check back next week.

And welcome to the Big Apple.

How old is he? If he's in his 30's, he should consider going to technical school and learning a trade - if he's got no college degree, this could be a wonderful thing. And, with a trade, he'll never be out of work.

NYPD requires their applicants to be a US Citizen, have 60 college credits(foreign can be accepted based on NYPD guidelines) or at least 4 years in the US military, and must be no older than 35 years of age to be appointed as one.

He's not a US Citizen and only has a HS diploma.

To the OP, try private security companies. High profile ones that require law enforcement/military experience. He should probably get an armed security license here and apply for bodyguard/executive chauffeur type of jobs.

Thanks for all your responses guys.

As 009 pointed out, my husband is not a US citizen, and by the time he will be eligible to apply for citizenship, he will be 36 (wow, so old!)

We will look into all the suggestions. What kind of salary could he expect for working for a private security company? Will his English accent help him at all? Ha!
