Default College Student moving to the Bronx - Help!

I am moving to the Bronx in May to attend graduate school at Mercy College and I've only been to New York once (for my interview). I need to know of safe neighborhoods with affordable apartments. Also, if anyone knows of the best way of getting an apartment (websites, phone numbers, subletting, etc.) that would be great. I've heard Pelham Bay, Throggs Neck, Country Club, Morris Park to name a few are safe. Thanks so much!

Actually all of those areas that you listed are pretty respectable. They are some of the better areas of the Bronx. Of course it still is the Bronx so the area looks a little bit rough around the edges, but the neighborhoods that you mentioned are quite safe.

Have you checked out craigslist.org? Thats probably the most popular online webpage for apartments. If you can't find anything on there just contact a local realtor's office and they usually have someone who works specifically on rentals. Of course the commission charged by these realtors is quite outrageous in this area, so it might be best if you could find something on you own (as with craigslist).
