Default Nursery school/daycare process for 2 year old? new to this.

As per my other posts -we are thinking about moving back to NYC (In AUstralia now). Will likely live in Tribeca/downtown, UES, or Park Slope. We have one child and will want to put him in some sort of half-day program once he turns 2 (for a few days a week).

My question - can someone point me in the right direction re: how the whole pre-school/daycare thing works in NYC? I am finding some schools on the internet but no one posts their fees. How much does it cost? It seems like you have to apply ages in advance, etc.

I know it is a big topic and I don't want to take up everyone's time - I am sure there is a site out there that explains all of this....I just cannot find it. Help requested.

thanks!
