What places in the outer boroughs/Westchester/NJ are walkable, with a mass transit commute into Manhattan of under an hour (some flexibility here), and have 3BR houses/townhouses under $400K? It doesn't have to be a fancy house, or large, or with a lot of land. It doesn't have to be in a great school district, b/c we homeschool. Just someplace safe.

Walkable in America is becoming scarce

You might take a look at the upper Bronx, near Jacobi Hospital. As I recall it has some nice housing, street walking and about an hour to Manhattan. I can't recall if the neighbourhood has a name.

Also I think you could get something nice near the Rockaways for this price and size.

You might also find some housing in Brooklyn--Flatbush area or perhaps near into Coney Island close to Ocean Parkway (near Coney Island Hospital).

And Yonkers cames to mind. Some good housing up there and a walkable city/town.

Just some ideas.
