I don't mess with the NYC rec departments for weights. It's always way too small and way too over crowded. For other recreational uses, its definitely great though.

I would recommend Star Fitness but you're not in the Bronx. I only place about 35-40 a month.

It amazes me on how much bull**** is put out in this forum. The NYC REC are perfectly fine. You have to go to the right gyms. The best NY recreation gyms are Thomas Jefferson, Alfred E. Smith, St. Marys, St. John's, Chelsea, Assert Levy and Al Oerter.

Check out the locations for Planet Fitness. I know they've run some outrageous deals (like $10/mo) but don't have any locations in Manhattan. Queens maybe.

3 different locations, I have a passport membership. Prices are not high, atmosphere, people, trainers everything seems great

I concur abou the Rec Dept Gyms. Some of them are outdated and the ones that are brand new Chelsea and Columbus Circle become jam packed.

Cheap Gyms - Planet Fitness and Blink Fitness - Both are 10 to 30 monthly. I believe they don't offer gym towels to shower after your workout

Medium Price Gyms - NYSC, Crunch, UFC, YMCA gyms.

High Price Gym - Equinox, Chelsea Piers

I have been a member of the below

West Side YMCA - 63rd st
City Rec Gym - Chelsea
NYSC - Mercer Gym
Crunch - 37th st 6-7th ave
Mid City Gym - Times Square area
Chelsea Piers
Now - UFC gym in Soho (canal st)

My favorite was the West Side YMCA. Big gym, great range of cardio machines, free weights, and machines, box and kickboxing room, indoor track, and central park right next door. There is a blink fitness that will open up once they finish the GWB Mercado Bus Terminal.
