Are there any decent gyms in Manhattan or Queens that don't cost more than $40/month? Forget NYSports club, even the Y charges the same price per month...

I used to go to the Carmine Street Gym (now called Tony Dapolito recreation center) which was dirt cheap. ($75/year last I checked). Its got everything. The only downsides were limited use during kid's summer camp and the fact that it gets very crowded in the evening. But it has weights, exercise machines, a small track, basketball court and pool and if you can go during off-peak hours its great.

Its part of the parks department and I know there are other similar gyms around the city.

I think my friend went to one of the $75 per year gyms for awhile.

Where in Queens are you looking? There is a place called EFN Zone at 78th St and Roosevelt Ave that costs about $200 a year (though they will try to sell you a membership for $400 a year - which you should negotiate down). It's "decent" but certainly not the calibre of a NYSC or even the YMCA in Union Sq (which is actually really nice).

There may be others in the price range as well. Have you tried checking reviews on yelp.com?

The Astoria Sports Complex is around $200 a year as well.

Awesome! Thanks so much, the NYC rec centers are exactly what I was looking for. I will have to check them out. I was totally caught off guard by the cost of the YMCA...thought they were supposed to be cheap?

Not sure about the EFN zone - can't find info on it on google or on yelp - sounds like the NYC rec centers are a better deal for the price and locations. Thanks though!

Isn't Gold's Gym or Bally's around $50 or so? Either should be cheaper than NYSC, and much cheaper than Equinox or Crunch, but you get what you pay for (i.e. long waits, overcrowding, old equipment, skeevy people) Just another instance of the high cost of living in NYC.

NYSC may be more willing to deal since people are dropping gym memberships to save money, but I doubt they'd come down to $40/month and some of the other places people are mentioning are a better deal.

Default NYC rec centers

Some of NYC's rec centers have gyms - some a bit old but dirt cheap. $50/year - how can you beat that??

Here's an example:

New York City Department of Parks & Recreation: Alfred E. Smith

When was the last time you used a Parks department Rec center? The equipment is rusty and outdated, the locker rooms stink, the restrooms look like they could use some serious cleaning and scrubbing and over enthusiastic jocks come there with a real bad attitude. Use the Y instead...yes its a bit pricey but you can work out in peace...besides its a NY tradition to use the Y.
