if it's Rochambeau between 208th and 210th IMO that's a decent block. i walk on that block every month back and forth to my car for follow ups at Monte. You've got Monte offices and clinics on that block.
any of those pubs left there aren't many. I used to go to 204th street in 1990 and the street was packed with irish people. Something happened in the 90's that changed it
probably would be safer coming home on the D than the 4. Walking from 206th street station to Rochambeau would be a short walk and should be OK, I assume you'd be somewhere between 210th and 206th on Rochambeau
Most of the Irish people in the area are from Northern Ireland or the Northern part of the Republic. When the troubles ended in the early 1990s and the economy over there picked up a lot of the Irish just packed up and headed on home. Many more felt that Bainbridge was declining and decided to move up to Woodlawn,Yonkers, or out to Rockland Co.
Also, keep Parkchester in mind. Safe, serene, tons of amenities, lots of greenspace, large well laid out floorplans, easy commute into Manhattan, close to the Gardens and the Zoo, family friendly, etc. I can't speak for any of the other communities in the Bronx as I am still checking different places out, but I would be happy to answer any questions that anyone has about where I currently live and own a condo. Good luck in your search!
Woodlawn is a good option if you are working in Westchester and are commuting by car anyway, or are commuting to Grand Central standard rush hours (and you live relatively close to the Metro North station). Commuting by subway from Woodlawn would be pretty long since there aren't any in the neighborhood.
The area is a bit sketchy but has some nice streets. Not on its way down anymore, but not on the way up either, and if the economy goes south, it'll take a dive. Working class, primarily Spanish now. There are a lot of families. Hard working working class sort of people. Used to be a lot of Irish but except for the old folks, they've all moved out. My niece lives in Norwood. Her street is kind of trashy. I wish she would move elsewhere. I used to live in Bedford Park, which is south of Norwood, but I would not live there now. Very declined. Sad. If the deal is really good, go for it. If sort-of a deal, look elsewhere. Nearby you might want to head towards Amalgamated Housing on Van Cortlandt Park South, much more family oriented and quiet. I live in Inwood, tippy top of Manhattan and it is very nice here, although some parts share the same problems Norwood does in terms of noise, trash, and ghetto mentality. D train takes you downtown and #4 train is also nearby. Montefiore and North General Hospitals are nearby, with Monte being one of the best in NYC.
Thanks again for the replies. I am still reading them as you post. Yeah the deal is very good thats why I'm finding out whatever I can.
It's on Rochambeau Ave between 208th-210th...
