Stern is one of the top business schools in the country. I don't see why it would not set you apart. So many people have MBA's now, if you can afford Stern I think it would be worth it for you.

Stern will certainly open more doors for you. Top firms look for people from top schools. If you are exceptionally talented in your field, it makes little difference what school you attended. Only you know your level of talent and whether you could use the extra edge Stern can give you.
Agreed. Your exit options out of Stern will be much better, especially if you consider the sheer number of Stern alums who are in the business world. Don't get me wrong - the CUNY schools provide GREAT education, but your overall network and opportunities will be much greater at Stern. I'm sure you can google this, but the average base pay out of top MBA programs is something like 100-130k.
I was accepted to CUNY and waitlisted to Stern. I got a letter from Stern last weekend notifying me that I was accepted.
The overall difference is about $40 - $60K of debt. I'm 35, an engineer, and I want to go into management.
I already work in a Fortune 500 company with arms in publishing and finance.
I can afford the debt afterwards, but want to know, is it worth it? ten years from now, if I'm up for a job, will Stern set me apart that much better?
What CUNY school was it? Baruch?
CUNY (Bang for the buck) + Fortune 500 experience = Doors open!
Fortune 500 experience + Stern = Doors open!
Seems like you have a win-win! Only difference is that with CUNY, you may have to come to the job whereas at Stern, the job will come to you! There are ways to make both work in your favor!
As folks have said, there will be better networking opps if you go to Stern, but with 35k in debt, will you have less freedom to choose how and where you want to work?
I would go with Stern, but it is something to think about.
Of course in life, it comes down to what you make of it in the real world. I have Stern buddys who didn't do anything with their degree while others who became really successful.
Get the Fortune 500 company to foot the bill for the B-school, Mr. Engineer. If you're a PE with an MBA, you're possibly in a good position, depending on what you want to do. Compared to engineering school, B-school is a cake walk - don't let anyone tell you differently. You still have to study, you still have to work, but the subject matter's a breeze.

I agree.
