Hi:
I am considering renting an apt. for a couple weeks in the east Village and want to know if it is safe and clean. I am considering a rental on east 6th street between 1st and 2nd (335 E. 6th to be exact). I just don't know the area very well and don't always trust owners in telling the complete truth.
Thanks-
lilandyprods

In terms of clean... Well, there's no such thing in Manhattan. The air is dirty; if you open your windows for just a couple of hours black silt deposits magically appear.

Seriously: this whole area is very dirty. There's litter, grease from restaurants, various filths, "crusty" kids running around all the time.

The area may be filthy, but it's overall safe. I hang out at a bar called Standings at 7th and 2nd all the time, and even in a drunken stupor at 4AM, have never felt the least bit in an unsafe or desolate area - there are ALWAYS people around. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on your point of view.

The East Village is very safe; very loud, but safe. As jds2001 suggested, it's a destination party neighborhood, but because there are so many people around, it's safe. I've live in the East Village for years and so used to the noise that I don't even notice it anymore.

like others said, clean is relative : p I lived a few blocks south of that for years and loved every minute of it. You learn to sleep through the sirens and bar skirmishes outside : p

Are you subletting the place for a few weeks? Does the building allow that?

I will say the farther east you go, it will get a bit more shady/dirty. I rarely went east of Ave C.

You will have loads of fun and exploring north south and west of you plenty.

anyways,..my 2 cents,..

good luck!

The village, the east village, can be a lot of fun. Dirty- well that is most of NYC. I live in a sheeshy neighborhood and even filth is here. It is a big city, there is always going to be trash somewhere, smells, and noise...
