Oh okay....wow....I didn't know landlords charge a bunch of extra fees for finding roommates....

...and yes, craigslist is a Godsend. I have found apts and roommates through that website.

Heh, I'm paying less than $700/mo right now for a 1br, so that's why I figured that would be a good starting point for rent with roommates. I am not a fan of roommates but since it would only be while in gradschool (I would probably end up coming back to PA or moving to some other exotic place...lol) I wouldn't mind sharing things for a few years. I'm glad to know I can have some more options with other ppl. I have lots of time to think about it as I will probably end up applying next fall and not this fall (don't think i'll be done with my MA thesis in time for a fall 09 start...lol).

It'd be worth it to go into the city and look at the bulletin boards in the administration office at Columbia or NYU, to see who else might need a roommate!

Have you checked into the housing that the Universities offer? I am not sure about NYU, but I thought Columbia had campus housing for some of the Doctorate programs.
