Hi everyone,

I've been trawling through these forums for a while now, I can't believe how incredible helpful most of you guys are. Hopefully, you have a few minutes to help me out.

I'm 23yr old male, undertaking a 3 month internship working in Hastings-On-Hudson. I'm looking for somewhere great to live on a rental budget of $500 - $1000, but not more than an hour commute to work.

Any ideas? I'm considering areas of the Bronx or Harlem, but there is a lot of conflicting opinions. Yonkers is short on accomodation and Hastings-on-hudson can be quite expensive.

Do you have any great ideas?

That's a hard situation since you will need the place to be furnished, or you will have to rent furniture. And, anything is going to be at the upper end of your budget, unfurnished. I would check into Riverdale, since you can find some studios around that price, but you would need a short term rental. The best bet will be a sublet or a roommate situation for the duration of your stay. I would not tend to suggest Upper Manhattan as you would likely want to be on the MetroNorth Hudson Line train to get to Hastings, and that stops at 125th St. in Harlem before making stops in the lower Bronx and then on to Marble Hill, Spuyten Duyvil, Riverdale.

Going in the other direction on the same train line, you can look in areas like Ossining and Peekskill, which are generally less expensive. There are some rough parts of these towns, but they're not that bad these days, as they have come a long way since the really bad years. Again, this is going to be closer to $1000 for a small apartment.

Closer to Hastings, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow might have something in either a share or a sublet. They are an easy drive or train commute to Hastings.

Across the river, in Rockland County, you have other options that are not too bad to get to Hastings, but rush hour on the Tappan Zee Bridge can be a pain in the neck, for sure. Are you working during standard hours? If you have a schedule that allows for either an early or a late commute and start time, that can open this area up for a sane commute, assuming you will bring a car with you. There is some public transportation to get to the Tarrytown train station from some areas in Rockland, which would put you within easy commute of Hastings. The Nyack area is a nice town and is on the Hudson River, just across the bridge.
