Niagara Falls is about 7 hrs by car or train from NYC but well worth the trip.

Me, I wouldn't think it's worth it to go 300 miles to see some water falling, especially when there is so much in NYC, but if you want to do it- save yourself 10+ hours - take Jetblue or Delta from JFK to Buffalo- 1 hr flight vs 7 hr drive.

What you should see while you are visiting NYC depends on what interests you as there is so much to see.

Airbnb looks like a pretty good resource for short-term stay, especially for a whole family.

I also agree about the Christmastime visit. Almost any time is better than August for visiting NYC.

If you come at Xmas just remember that its when just about all hotels, even discounted, charge the highest rates. Restaurants, streets, and stores are most crowded. There are few retail sales on anything. And the Broadway theaters are booked pretty solidly. There are still plenty of things to do, but be forewarned that NYC during the holidays is fun AND expensive.
