how is this Queens neighborhood these days? (apartment, safe area)

I worked at 39th Ave and 30th street in LIC Queens in the summers of '79, '80 and '81. It was a pretty mellow safe area then. I remember an irish/german guy we used to order sandwiches from on 29th street, great corned beef sandwiches. has the area changed at all? I also remembered a big bank (Spanish name i believe or maybe it was an Astoria Federal) on 36th Ave where we cashed our checks.

There's quite a bit of new construction going on in that general area. That is to say, big new (expensive) apartment buildings.
