Hey guys, I'm thinking about moving into a room in a house in Woodside. Does anyone know anything about the area around the 61st St. stop off the 7 train? AKA - would people be completely sketched out by the area if they come visit? I've heard that it's a pretty decent neighborhood as far as New York goes and the prices in Manhattan are just unbelievable.

sketched out? what do you mean by that?

61st street isnt a bad area at all. a bit noisy, crowded and even a little dirty since there so many people around, but what commercial district isnt a little dirty in NYC? i'm not sure if you may feel comfortable walking around at night under the el, but i felt comfortable walking around at night without a problem, that all depends on you.

You mean freaked out by the sketchiness? Everything's relative, so that's a hard question to answer. It's a decent neighborhood, but a lot of people call it a dump based on appearances.

It's a decent neighborhood and may be cheap because Queens is under-rated in general (unlike "hip" Brooklyn).

How far from the 7 train? I agree that the noise and extra dirt in the air from the train could make apartments that are *right* by there not so great.

I've walked in that area plenty of times and have never felt that it is sketchy.

I found in my search that several of the neighborhoods north of the 61st stop to be a little sketchy. I wouldnt say completely dangerous, but the potential seemed to be there. The area south towards Queens Blvd seemed a lot quieter and cleaner. I almost got an apartment on 63rd and Queens Blvd. Its a decent area.

The only problems on 61st & Roosevelt are the drunk Irish and Mexicans. There have been purse snatching and perverts but it's an OK area.

Take the Q18 northbound and you will pass 51st St. and Northern Blvd (Woodside Houses). This area is best avoided at night (lots of desolate industrial areas). As you head northwest into Astoria, it gets better
