Default Transportation in nyc

I will be moving to NYC as a student and I will probably be riding the metro 6 or 7 days a week. Is there a weekly or annual pass that I can buy that will save me some money? If not, what's the best way to save money for frequent riders. Thank you!

In all likelihood, what you'll be riding is the subway. You won't hear many New Yorkers refer to the "metro." (That's for every other place in the world...excepting London, of course, which has an Underground).
