I work in Queens, but yes I can get into the city in 10 minutes. Of course, it depends where I want to go in the city.
I didn't say that you told me to do anything! I never said that you told me to move..I just said that to you NY is overrated. You don't like Queens - or so your post seemed that way - so then good for you. Don't live there. I just don't see it as overrated. It has everything I need. It's not for you, fine. I don't think it's perfect - not at all. No place is. I love visiting and exploring other cities - this is just home. I'm not taking offense to your comments, I just think some of your posts weren't true, and a little negative. You started out saying NYC is overrated, the apts are crappy, it's all hype. I just disagree. For me, it isn't like that.

Alright then jax78. Some of my post did get negative. When "Materialistic" said that San Fran was FARM LIKE, I was ready to puke. Then I think I read that she said she was from cali. I mean if a person was born in Mannhattan, never Mannhattan in their life, San Fran being farm like? I still do think someone could say that. A city of almost 800,000 thousand farm like? I guess it comes down to what impresses some people and what dont. Not all of NYC is over rated. But I do believe ( in my personal opinon ) that alot of the city neighborhoods aren't that exciting and over priced. Not that anyone is running around hyping Flushing or College Point,etc.. I'm looking at the city as a whole. Not just the exciting parts of Mannhattan and all them chic neighborhoods. To be honest, the only thing I like about Flushing, is that it's a really safe neighborhood. That's it. I have to leave the neighborhood way too much. I personally like neighborhoods that are more self efficiant. Them neighborhoods over by Queens BLVD I'm sure Id like alot more. If I was plan on staying here for life, Id have to move to a different neighborhood. Im sorry, but me not being asian, Flushing is kinda lame to me.

But most working stiffs can't afford, or could less about broadway, and all the other culture stuff.
|
Hence, "real" New Yorkers don't bother with 'em.

What gets me is how many people here are impressed with 50 or 60 grand a yr jobs

When was this? 1985? People making that kind of money here can't afford squat and don't talk about it at all.

Dude, really? Man... What's there to brag about regarding that kind of money?
You might be able to rent something in the Albany vicinity with the take home money $50 k will get you, but in "the city" it's pretty tough. Plus, there are plenty of lawyers and I-bankers living in those areas who pull $50k as an annual bonus (and more). Now that you can brag about. But these days, in NYC, that's not brag-worthy.
That being said, having a job is a good thing and everyone should be proud of being gainfully employed.

Otis, u are preaching to the choir! 50 grand a yr, in this day an age, is nothing to brag about if u are living in any MAJOR city. Alot of people live on alot less of course. This city would be screwed if it wasnt for the immigrants. Cause they will work jobs for less $ than most americans will. Of course, in a sense, that's what keeps non skilled jobs pay, low here.

Ohhhh God don't let me get started on how much I think different people screw up the economy. I bet half of you in construction and demolition would be making a good chunk more than what you are already getting if that under the table BS wasn't allowed. (Not to say that you guys don't already get paid pretty decently).

Welder, how about taking in a museum like Queens Museum of the Moving Image, a movie on dvd like Spiderman whose main character lived in Forest Hills, a park like Flushing Meadows, a ballgame at Shea, a trip to Jackson Heights to eat another cuisine instead of the Chinese food that you don't seem to like, a ride on the Circle Line, the Empire State, an off-off broadway play, watch some soccer or cricket in Queens? Why not even do a pony ride on some kids' circus and be a kid again for a moment or two?
Lighten up, smile at the world and you'd be surprised to see the world smile back at you, my friend.
There's so much to do instead of being on a pc 24/7 debating New Yorkers about whether their city is worth it or not.
It's Saturday night - what are you doing on a forum instead of enjoying the NYC culture?

I told u my man, I aint a culture kinda guy. My wife is abroad right now visiting her family. That's why I've been on the computer so much. I've been to about 15 bars covering 4 or 5 neighborhoods around here. I'm tired of dropping 50 or 60 bucs (sometimes more) in a bar, and basicly going home kinda bored. Please, spare me the "U aint going to right bars speech ". I ain't no amatuer when it comes to getting drunk or finding a decent bar. Alot of bars anymore are SAUSAGE parties too. All over the country, not just here. Did woman quit drinking? I'm talking bars now, not clubs. I know i could take the train to Mannhattan, but, been there done that. I always almost **** my pants on the way back. Always have to get of the train early, just to take a ****. I like "GOOD" chinese food. Flushing Meadow Park? I aint trying to be cute, but after spending yrs living by the lakefront in Chicago, well u understand. Cricket? come on man....
