is there a cheap place for stay temporary 1 month? (New York: apartments, rent)

Hi, i'm an Italian professional moving in NYcity. Anyone could tell me if is there a place where rent bedroom with bathroom around $500/month?
I need someone temporary or pay month for month, because i'm not sure how long I will stay here
Can you tell me if there are particular dangerous streets in the evening?
Any good and local website for find room or roommate? ;-)

You maybe be able to share a house in Queens at a reasonable price. Many home owners will take in tenants for extra cash. Have a look at the classifieds in New York Newsday.

Check the craigs.list board for rooms and apartments. They generally have a good lot of them in all different prices and areas.
