Hello everyone! I am currently a student at the University of Connecticut and am hoping to complete a rotation at Columbia University Medical Center. I won't actually find out if I got it until the first week of November and am really stressed out (naturally) about finding a place to stay. The rotation begins on 01/02/09 and will run until 06/30/09. Commuting from home is unreasonable (probably over 2 1/2 hours each way) so I am hoping to find something close to Columbia (ideally) or if I had to I wouldn't mind commuting an hour or so from a suburb in NY, CT, or NJ. Please if you have any advice at all I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much.

PS. Someone was telling me to look in Washington Heights..they said it is pretty reasonable and that I could potentially be within walking distance or a subway stop or two. Is this true? Is the area safe and do you think I could find someone will to rent for 6 months? Thanks again

Columbia U. Med Ctr is in Washington Heights. Try to post on the bulletin board in the medical school on 168th Street, because many 4th year students will, themselves, be going on rotations, and may be willing to sublet to you or trade...

Are you allowed to use the Columbia housing website, if so check that out they will have 6 months rentals for people leaving for the spring semester.

I asked if I would be able to get Columbia housing and they said I can't because I'm affiliated with the University of Connecticut and not Columbia. But maybe since this is off campus they can help. Thanks for that link..I'll definitely check it out.

There's a HUMONGOUS waiting list for Columbia housing - and it's restricted to full time Columbia-matriculated students and faculty.

Hi, a query along similar lines. I'm a final year med student from London due to start an elective placement at st lukes hospital for a month in april this year. As im taking part in an exchange I am eligible for college accommodation. As i understand the majority of student are placed in bard hall, i believe this is quite a fair distance from st lukes and the bustling city would i be better off asking for accommodation at the morningside campus? At the same time im coming alone and dont know anyone and as i'll have finished my exams by then will be wanting to do a lot of socialising and partying! Suggestions??

Take the place in Bard Hall. It's not a bad trip to St. Lukes. I used to do it all the time when I was in medical school at Columbia. You'll find people to go out with. After all, you'll be surrounded by medical students, some of whom won't be caring much about their rotations in April because they'll have been told of their internship assignments and will be graduating in a month.
