Why is it disturbing that they want to have a spanish rather than black American identity if their more recent roots are latino rather than black American?
I clearly delineated in my post that there is a difference between race and ethnicity. I should clarify that it is disturbing to me when blacks of Latin heritage deny that they are black in a racial discussion. You want to be "Spanish" or "Dominican" or "Hispanic" ? Fine! But's that's a cultural/ethnic question, not a racial one. Identify with whatever you want, you're just going to look self-hating and ignorant (and I am NOT accusing Mir_ny of being any of these things, just for the record) when you are in denial of your race. Identifying with being Hispanic doesn't make you any less black (or any less white, for that matter).

Educated people know the difference between race, ethnicity, and culture.
Mir_ny is a black person of Latin ethnicity who identifies with Latin culture. She is black (racially) but identifies with Latin culture more than African-American culture.
The "I'm not black, I'm Dominican/PuertoRican/Panamanian!" attitude can be disturbing and I do understand why you're commenting on this MottHavenDude, but Mir_ny never denied being racialy black; she just has emphasized being culturally Latin.
She said she was American!!!! Why are you so worried about her race/ethnicity/culture etc? UNBELIEVABLE that this actually took up an entire page. Shows you where the USA stands huh? JESUS!
Oh what the heck, here's a fairly recent pic of me. So that's what NooYowkur81 looks like, but IMO I am not very photogenic. lol.
BTW I wanted to point out that I think its funny people in NYC almost always assume dark-skinned Latinos are Dominican. FYI, there are Black people all over Latin America. But I guess its what they are most familiar with...
