30% higher if you are in certian fields...McDonald's still pays minimum wage of $7.25 I believe, as do a host of other low wage jobs like security, retail, etc. If you are a low wage earner...NYC is certainly not the place to be and is not paying a wage 30% more than anywhere.....you get the same wage here as you do in ChumpChoo, Arkansas..except of course, your taxes are higher here (as is everything else).

That sounds good but take this into consideration:

Dallas Cost of living is 77% less
Houston Cost of living is 92% less
Austin cost of living is 71% less
Atlanta cost of living is 47% less
Philadelphia cost of living is 78% less
Boston cost of living is 29% less
Washington DC cost of living is about the same (this one seems off)
Chicago cost of living is 30% less
Los Angeles cost of living is 6% less
San Francisco cost of living is 12% higher (however on another site it claimed it was 6% cheaper...who knows)

This all from Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed

Some of these seem exaggerated or not quite accurate, but you get the general idea. Point is you don't move to New York because you get more bang for you buck.

Nope, actually DC is not all that much less expensive than NYC. Housing prices may be less, but nearly everyone has a car, so the offset is not too much greater. And, with regard to food and other shopping, I don't notice much difference between the two, personally.

I wasn't sure. I just assumed it was cheaper, but doesn't surprise me that its not.

Those numbers are way off.

I became suspect with the claim that Houston is 92% cheaper. That means that $50,000 in NYC has the same buying power as $4000 in Houston?! A $100,000 salary in NYC equals an $8000 salary in Houston?!

Anyway, I checked. maybe you read the numbers wrong. Here are numbers I got from the same source. They seem more realistic.

Dallas: 44% cheaper
Houston: 48% cheaper
Austin: 42% cheaper
Atlanta: 32% cheaper
Philadelphia: 44% cheaper
Boston: 22% cheaper
Washington: 1% more expensive
Chicago: 23% cheaper
San Francisco: 14% more expensive
Los Angeles: 5% cheaper
