You could say that. Firefighters top out at $86k after 5 years w/ differentials, OT, etc. for working a standard 3 day, 24 hour shift. Many of those guys have second jobs and easily bank out over $100k. FDNY EMS, if you want to count them(which many don't), as an EMT tops out at $39K without the perks and a Paramedic tops out at $50k without the perks.

All this with just an AA from any community college! Why did they not also raise the minimum requirements to a 4 year degree? We want the best..we are paying for the best...but not even a basic 4 years degree? Shameful.

The pay raise is designed to increase the number of qualified applicants. Putting in a 4 yr degree requirement knocks out too many people who are qualified, but don't yet have their degree--this works against the city's efforts. Most people with 4 yr degrees don't want to start at 42K and then wait for FIVE years to hit 91K.
Also, more cops w/ a 4 yr degree means more cops who can leave and go back to the private sector and EASILY make as much or even more money--and have their nights and weekends off!

Back in the 80's, Prince Georges County in Maryland had a 4 yr degree requirement and a min age of 25. they paid pretty good, too. Today, they still pay pretty well, and even give their cops a take home car, but the min age is 21 and the college req. is 60 credits. The 4 yr degree req. was killing thier recruitment efforts--and like I said, they paid pretty good. And this was back in the 80's when cop jobs were more popular. Today, PD's all over the country have a hard time recruiting b/c young people aren;t interested in Law Enforcement.

You are kidding right? Most people don't want to wait a whole 5 years to make almost $100,000 a year + Mega benefits???????? How many jobs right out of school with a 4 year degree (ANY 4 year degree mind you) pay $42,000 to start and after 5 years make almost $100,000? Let's not forget, they also get a LIFETIME pension at 1/2 pay, LIFETIME medical for them and their families, qualify for all kinds of special housing/financing programs, and a host of other incentives/perks. Please round up all the 28 years olds, with 5 years experience and a 4 year degree making almost $100,000 PLUS all of these benefits.....stop being a clown dude. You are doing a great job of providing non-stop mis/disinformation.....you sure you don't work for the Union?

They are now going to be paying these guys almost 6 figures, yet all they need is an AA? I think the city should demand a better quality of cop...and with that a 4 year degree.. ANY 4 year degree...should have also been included in the deal. I believe that it is not just a blue collar job, these guys carry guns, and have the power to ruin your life (as we have seen over and over again). Would you prefer a guy with a high school diploma carrying the gun, or one with a college degree? This isn't the post office or the DMV....the choices these guys make on a daily basis are life and death for themselves and the public....I know I would want cops to have 4 year degree...does not have to be from Yale.... And at these salaries....it should have been part of the deal. This is not asking much!
|
Problem is, they would have to offer A LOT more than 91K to staff the 35k+ member NYPD with Bachelor Degree manpower--and they know it! Turnover would be high with so many cops being able to bounce back to the private sector and make good $$$.

Dude you really have no concept of the police force if you believe that almost $100,000 is too little to keep cops. AS if their choices with a 4 year degree are Investment Banking or NYC Cop.....its more like Accounting Clerk or NYC Cop. Let's be real here....

hey then upgraded the minimum education requirement to an AA...and again I ask...why do you think they did that...
|
Two reasons:
1) Public Education in NYC has become so poor, that 60 college credits has become the new HS Diploma, so to speak.
2) It has been accepted (whether rightly or wrongly) that two yrs of college made cops less prone to corruption, so after the Mollen commission w/ the whole Michael Dowd fiasco, among other things, the city adopted the college req.

That's way better than most private sector work out there. Why would they not want to do that?

NooYowkur this guy is just a talking head for the police force/union. The more he talks..the funnier it gets..he has 0 credibility...the whole things is a joke really. To think that NYC Cops would shun "waiting" a whole 5 years to earn $100,000.....and somehow will do so much better in the private sector is just a complete joke. Whether cops top pay was $25,000 or $500,000....he would be saying the same thing....pay him no mind and don't try to rationalize it.
