People don't generally talk to strangers on public transportation so that's not really a good place to meet someone.

It’s very easy to meet people in general in NYC. You just have to be honest about your intent or interest (i.e., looking for future spouse OR just an affectionate friend w/benefits deal, or platonic friend/acquaintanceship). But, as with anything else, some people will respond, some won't. Good luck!

How does a man (57 years old in my case) start talking to a strange woman say on a train? What does he say? I'm alone, hoping to find a wife but how? This city and this world are not geared towards strangers meeting each other.
I have to wonder how people in NY meet their future mates.

It's easier to swim in a pond than an ocean. Generally, the larger the city, the harder it is for people to hook up.
Large cities attract personalities that like to be anonymous and alone among a sea of people. It's easier for a jerk or b**** to thrive in large cities where you never run into someone again.

You are correct.
The city and the world today is moving towards a free market system when it comes to mating.
The historical system of arranged marriages, economic marriages, purchasing spouses, dowries, aristocratic marriages, etc. is dying out. No more artificial interference. The point is to make it as hard as possible to weed out the gene pool. Free market = survival of the fittest.
As for what to say, just say anything. If she likes you and is open to the mating dance, she'll let you know. You have nothing to lose.
After all, you're 57 and how many more good years are left before you kick the bucket?
