Default Philadelpha, Boston, Connecticut

I'll be in NYC for 10 days late next month-early Oct, and if opportunity allows me to make a 'side trip', I would like to take a train to either Philly or Boston just for a day. Of course, it means only a daytime to explore but that's alright.

WHICH CITY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND????

As for Connecticut, I know of the railroad routes to Hartford and New Haven. What I need to know is this: Does anyone know if these rail routes pass through enough "fall foliage" to make the trip worthwhile???

I don't drive, so renting a car is no option.

Thank you for your help.

I don't recommend Boston.. it's a great city, but the 4 hour trip (just going one way) will waste most of your time and kill your day, and mood, lol.

I would recommend Boston over Philly regardless of the extra hour of travel time. Sleep on the train.

In spite of the time, I'd recommend Boston, as well. There's much more to do and see there.

Take a really early morning train to Boston and get there with some time to do things. Boston's pretty small and compact but lots to do and see.

I don't know that much about Philly (only been there a few times) but I really think a side trip to Boston would be fun.

I actually enjoy the train ride from NYC-Boston as there's lots to see out the windows (make sure you get a window seat).

Boston, for sure, since there's so much to do in and around the city. Philadelphia is okay, but there's not the same level of attractions, and if you're looking for any foliage, it's not going to be that evident between New York and Philadelphia at that time of year. I'd agree with taking the early morning train to Boston and then exploring, taking the late train or one of the coaches back.

For those who say there is less to do in Philadelphia I would say that is untrue. In Philly you can go to numerous different museums, visit many historic sites, go shopping downtown, see our constitution, and go for rides on the Delware river. There is also the zoo and Fairmont Park. The City of Brotherly Love has plenty to do. It wins my vote.

Boston is much better but stay the night there. The travel time is not worth a day trip

It may be a bit of a tough trip with the 8+ hours of RT travel time, but people who live in and go to school in Boston regularly do one-day trips to NYC so it's certainly do-able. My parents who live in a Boston suburb have a bus that is organized by their town that does a one-day trip to NYC once every few months and I gather it's quite popular.

Also the Museum School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts runs one-day bus trips so the students can see the NYC galleries.
