I'm not p*ssed. I just don't care to read your comment telling me I'm cheap. No you aren't passing judgment on everyone (and i never said you was) but you are still passing judgment. Which is completely unnecessary.

Boy! That's bad! Makes me wonder what she has over the manager (fear?). Sad part of it all, is that there are competition people out there who'd love to have her job.

This one surprised me because I would never guess that baggers are tipped. The grocery store I use (I'm out of state) refuses tips because they are union. Hmmm. But you're right ~ that is what they are paid to do.
Same thing with banks. They pay more than minimum wage for counter clerks, yet charge all these fees for using their services! What, may I ask, are they being paid for when they're not helping customers? (However, I'm off-track on this one; bankers don't take tips.)

IMO, the rule in bars is, $1 per drink if you actually bought it at the bar and it's something easy -- simple liquor drinks or draft beer. If it's a more elaborate cocktail, or if there's table service, then I'll tip 15-20% of the total, but at least $2.
The only thing I think I may be cheap on is bottled beer at a bar. I'll tip a buck for every two or three. I can open a bottle of beer at home, and I actually do find it a little insulting that I'm expected to tip for that.

I use 20% as my benchmark for an absolute minimum, and I remember that people have bad days sometimes, but I will tip more for exceptional service.
I always tip cab drivers and the car service drivers, even though the car service guys get a better standard rate, since I do sometimes have the same set of drivers and they provide excellent service. I will give a cab driver a few dollars over the fare, and the car service guys usually get a flat rate of $5 or $10 extra.
Valets are always tipped, on the way in and on the way out, since they sometimes switch valets during the time the car is with them, and I usually give them $2 each time. And, I even tip the lot attendant at pay garages and lots that I use frequently, and have never had any issues or claims for damage with a vehicle, which may just be coincidental.
Gas station attendants get $1 or $2 for filling the car, if I go to full serrvice, and if they do the windows, I give them $3.
In restaurants, I will also tip if there was an issue in our party such as a child who created a mess, but that's directly to those who have to deal with it, not necessarily the server. I have tipped the busboys for this on a few occasions, since it's outside the norm of what they should have to do to prepare the table for the next seating.
Now, around the holidays, regular service providers from the doormen to the personal service providers each get a small personal gift and a tip to thank them for their service. I always like to include the small gift, since I think it makes more of an impression that I actually try to know something about them, which I do try to do.
I don't tolerate rude service, however, and for that I will tip exceedingly low, and/or complain to the management about the problem if the person is not performing their job with even the most minimum of courtesy.

I overtip all the time. I waitressed throughout high school and college so I know how it feels and some people literally live on tips and get basically no pay without it. I usually triple the tax for a tip or leave 20%. With the delivery guys I give at least $5, because I feel bad for them riding their bike, esp. when it's raining. I tip the taxi like $5 when it's 15.

I'd give $25 too if my mani/pedi was $18. $18 is cheap for a mani/pedi...If you were to get that in Manhattan it would be sooooo much more..so 7 more bucks is no biggie IMO.

Serious Reply:
page you do appear to be a generous tipper as does jax.
I think the standard in NYC is 15%-20% with the lower end for average service and the upper for great service. You're always free to tip above that and to leave less or none if service is mediocre or really bad. Cab drivers get the same range quoted above and expect it even though I can understnd the rationale that these guys are taking you from point a to b and not really displaying and personalized attention. But the same argument applies to food delivery guys. In NYC that range mentioned is usually expected/applied to restaurants, bars for several drinks ($1 per drink minimum generally), hairdressers, taxis, etc.
Now on a LIGHTER NOTE:
I once worked as a manicurist/pedicurist performing the services page mentioned in the quote and she was as beautiful as page and jax - guess what, I really had to tip her for the massage, etc that I was giving her. No way could I let her tip me .
lol.

Apparently, the manicurist knows how low she can go in basic charges so that she can draw in bigger tips. Smart, smart, smart woman, she knows what she's doing. Geeze-la-weeze is right! $25 would allow me to tip a number of service people well.
