Ok but I use crime statistics and prior experiences to support me. You really dont go by anything. This is why I feel my viewpoint is a more realistic one.

Your views are painfully biased and one sided, not because you use crime stats, but because you ONLY use crime stats, and your negative personal experiences in your life to formulate opinions about areas. You openly disregard and deride comments that challenge your doom and gloom views on life as "not real" or somehow wrong. Unfortunately, due to your personal/financial/social/economic conditions, you lack the ability, knowledge, and judgement to provide a balanced opinion, and just merely regurgitate the same tired story with just crime stats to back you. There is much more to life in the Bronx besides the thugs and criminals...unfortunately you are not able to see past what lies beyond your stoops. I know of both sides and speak of both. I am able to provide a reasonable assessment based on all the facts, not just focusing on the criminal element . I provide all the changes that are occuring to make the Bronx a better place, while you dismiss them as pointless, a waste of time, and "won't change anything." I acknowledge the challenges we face, but also recognize and speak to how things are getting better. And that is why we will continue to disagree.

I dont think it is plausible to claim one neighborhood as the king of all bad neighborhoods, as most of the really bad neighborhoods are very similar and it becomes just a subjective, personal preference. But I think we can all agree that the worst neighborhoods in NYC include (in no particular order): -East New York -Mott Haven -Brownsville -Hunts Point -Bedford Stuyvesant -Bushwick -University Heights/Mount Hope -East Harlem There are other undersireable neighborhoods, but I would say that these are all strong contenders for the worst neighborhood.

It's all about perspective. Someone coming from a moderately "hard" hood,i.e East Flatbush would might think today's ( not 20 years ago) Fort Green is safe, even comfortable.. For people from "hard" hoods it's a source of pride hence it's not unexpected that a battle for bragging rights ("my neighborhood is tougher than yours!") would ensue. Funny thing is that you can survive is a tough neighboorhood by being tough or more importantly by learning how NOT to stick out. Now I admit that's kinda hard for a white guy in the middle of Bushwick....Another funny thing is that all of these crooklyn thugs or Bronx stickup kids would be appetizer for some of the REAL gangsta hoods across the world. I'm talking about the Favelas in Rio or the soweto slums in South Africa.

I grew up in Far Rockaway and even with the projects constantly always feuding, we all thought East New York was the worst neighborhood in NY back in the 80's/early 90's. Then when I moved to Brooklyn after college, I changed my mind and decided that Crown Heights was the absolute worst. The constant tension between all minorities and the Jewish community who shared da 'hood was almost palatable and ALWAYS underlying. It hit the boiling point while I was still living there. Now that I'm across the River, I'm unhappy to say that the Rockaways are now always in the news. Guess it is subjective after all, or the violence just ebbs and flows every couple of years.

My feeling from reading through this thread is that Brownsville has not one positive comment made for it, unlike ENY, South Bronx communities or Bed Stuy etc.......

Ima take any hood in NYC over NO. If mario is right and university heights is the worst, then the worst for NYC isn't that bad. I lived on grand and 183 and yes, there was definately crime and it was definately the hood. That said, I lived there for two years and the one single time i was confronted by the element was hanging at my freinds crib, who happened to sell weed, and his place was broken into while i was there. Fortunately when they came in with knives into the room i was in, they recognized me and I didn't get stabbed cuz i happened to know them. And there you have your lesson: hang around people who break the law, and you put yourself at risk. And if you stay away from that, you will be fine.
As far as NYC's worst: Brownsville, Far Rockaway and Morrisania.

That's a pretty bad block you were on. But no, I dont think University Heights is the worst.
I group the Bronx into two distinct "hoods". The groupings have to do with neighborhood crime rates, demographics, neighborhood structure, poverty and history. And while East Tremont and West Farms are not in the southern portion of the Bronx, they have similar charactheristics as those nabes.
"South" Bronx : Mott Haven, Melrose, Hunts Point, Morrisania, Concourse, West Farms, East Tremont and Western Soundview.
"West-Central" Bronx: Highbridge, Morris Heights, University Heights, Tremont, Fordham, Fordham-Bedford and lower Kingsbridge Heights.
It makes more sense. Because what makes University Heights different from Fordham? They are all the same neighborhoods, with similar demographics and crime statistics. The only thing that seperates them is arbritary boundaries. But really the boundaries are subjective. All the neighborhoods in the areas are the same. But the above two groups are the two major hood areas in the Bronx. If I had another classification it would be the northeast Bronx. I dont think it's there yet.
But anyways, I have said many times that I think the "south" Bronx hoods are worse off. I get a different vibe in them than I do where I live. Anyways, there is more poverty and higher crime rates in the south Bronx hoods. Also the vast majority of housing projects are there. So I say they are the worst in the borough.
