I would like to add that there are blocks in University Heights that put blocks in Mott Haven to shame. Same for Tremont and Morrisania, etc etc. But when speaking in "general"....more crime is found in the lower Bronx. Im not one to say "My hood is harder than yours blah blah"...but there are some places here I wouldn't walk through.

As for my worst neighborhoods in the city.

1. East Harlem
2. "South" Bronx
3. Bedford-Stuyvesant
4. Brownsville
5. "West-Central" Bronx
6. East New York
7. Central Harlem
8. East Flatbush
9. Bushwick
10. Far Rockaway

I think the opposite....I find the South Bronx hoods to be far better than the central Bronx areas. The South Bronx has seen massive revitalization, including all new 2/3 family homes, some luxury condo developments and luxury brownstones, some influx of manhattanites, artists, and similar populations, huge retail initiatives like those around Yankee stadium, as well as Melrose (new university going in + commercial space), as well as a major force in the greening movement spurring massive plantings, new parks, and greenways. Unfortunately, none of this is really happening in the central Bronx...there has been some revitalization, but overall there is more of a general feel of deterioration where as the South Bronx is overwhelmingly centered on massive investment...the whole feel in the area is very positive and the air of change is strong. The few times I go through the central bronx I feel like I am going into a time warp...not enough has changed..and I see not much evidence of it. Then again, I don't go there often enough...for good reason.
