I saw lower income people, that's all - no crime or anything that frightened me. (I admit I wouldn't necessarily want to be around those buildings at night, perhaps but during the day - not a problem from what I saw) I had about 3 people give me what I would call WTF? stares, but mostly people ignored me or were actually quite freindly, a few old timers even engaging me in conversation.
I don't buy what you're pushing, SM. And I will continue to challenge you in your quest to keep newbies out of the Bronx.

I have no agenda. I will be the first to admit that the Bronx is nowhere near as dangerous as it was in 1990, 1980, ,or 1977 or any year in between, All I am saying is that there are still many neighborhoods in the Bronx that aren't safe. Whoever wants to move to the Bronx can be my guest. But they should know what to expect.

NYCWOMAN - It's hard to be caught up in crime when you're not involved in the B.S and " thuggery" however, that NH is not a cotton-candy park. You said you wouldn't want to be there at night.... so will you only enter/exit your residence during the day if you lived in Mott Haven?
It's sad you received some "WTF looks" as you put it. Lots of people in the NH know what it's like to receive such looks so, they should be the last to dish them out... I'm gathering you felt comfortable over all though so that's good.

Hi bx718. Actually what I meant to say was I wasn't sure that I would want to be on some of those more desolate side streets where all that was around was public housing. And yes, in MH (because it is generally more desolate that other residential areas) I would be more careful in the evenings than I would in other areas. But I certainly wouldn't avoid coming home late at night if I lived there, I would just be extra cautious. (I felt the same way in Williamsburg in the nineties, as well.) But what I am trying to get across is that there is more to the area than just "projects". There is a lot going on in Mott Haven right now - and A LOT of interest. I'm sorry if I come across like I am painting it as some kind of Disneyland - I guess I am just an optimist at heart and I tend to see the positives in any given area (like the friendly people in the shops and streets, the delicious food I had at Alexander's Cafe, the beautiful artists lofts, the reasonably priced pedicure I got, the beautiful trees in St. Mary's Park, all the residents who smiled and waved to me from their porches or balconies, the barber shop owner who asked me if I how much the new condos were going for, the very friendly bartender Starr at Sidewaters Bar and Grill.....I could go on and on. That is what I saw and experienced when I went there. Not drug deals, crime or gangbangers...
Thanks bx718 for your balanced post!

Thats going to happen in any neighborhood you go too if you choose your spots. In University Heights I can stroll through Davidson avenue from 193rd to Kingsbridge and think I was in the suburbs. Stroll through Phelan, Loring place just below BCC in Morris Heights and it's absolute heaven. However, these parts are few and far in between. East NY, Brownsville etc all have nice looking sections. Of course its going to appear nice if you pick your spots. Go right ahead, do that if you want. But just dont go on reporting on the neighborhood and how wonderful it is when you haven't actually visited the whole neighborhood and then base your opinion on it. Im pretty sure if you avoid the bad areas of any neighborhood, that it's going to be really nice.

Uh, as I have repeatedly said - I didn't CHOOSE my spots. I walked aimlessly for 5 hours - as I stated - not really always exactly sure where I was. Now, is Mott Haven bigger than what I could have taken in in one afternoon - of course. So, let's just say there were enough areas that WERE decent and nice enough to fill up 5 hours of an afternoon. How's that? A lot better than what you would have us believe, huh?

Stop lying. You didnt spent five hours walking. As you said you stopped to eat, got your nails done, went to the park etc....and those areas aren't the worst of Mott Haven. You even said yourself you weren't around any projects. Dont change your story around. Guywithacause showed you the nice areas only. You weren't walking aimlessly....he knew what he was doing. If you were walking five hours then you would have run into some trouble.
Believe that.

Do NOT call me a liar, my friend!!!!!
I went with Guy the FIRST time I was there, as he was gracious enough to show me around the area where he has lived ALL OF HIS LIFE. The second time I went on my own and I got off the subway at 9:00 am in the morning and I ended up at the Yankee Stadium area at around 6:00. I walked around for a few hours first, stopped for brunch at Alexanders, went into Bruckners next, walked around some more, stopped in for a pedicure and then finally ended up for a drink at Sweetwaters. I probably walked more streets than you've ever been down, unless you have lived there. I ventured FAR off the beaten path of Alexander and Bruckner Blvd.
So, if that is your assertion, that if I did in fact walk around for as long as I did and SHOULD have "run into trouble" - than you my friend are operating on extremely false and outdated information. Believe That! And readers should take that very much into account.

And if you go into my website and see all of my pictures, and IF you know Mott Haven so well, then you will CLEARLY see just how much of a perimeter I covered.

And Further, I in fact walked by several "projects" - what I SAID was I wouldn't necessarily want to be walking alone around them at night.
Next?

Oh, and btw, about a month ago, I also walked from 198th Street down the Grand Concourse to 149th Street. According to what you would have us believe, I probably should have "run into trouble" then too, correct?
