I'd really doubt the absolute worst neighborhood is Mott Haven... at least it has some non-ghetto bars, restaurants, stores, and housing. I have never been to East New York and knowing what I know about it, I will never go there. There is nothing there I'd want to see or do. I was pleasantly surprised to see "white people" and non-99 cent store/fried chicken restaurant businesses when I visited GWAC/MHDude in his hood; I knew he had told me about his neighborhood but it was the kind of thing that didn't really sink in until I saw it. I'm confident that there are several areas in this city that are much worse than Mott Haven. I'm not saying that it's not a high-crime neighborhood with a bad reputation, I just seriously doubt it's the worst.
And Mario, I would like to comment on what Henna quoted you saying above. Are you serious when you say that the LES is "void of character or grit" ?!? You must not have been east of Avenue A lately, and even west of there is plenty of character and grit. There are some pretty ghetto looking blocks around there. Also, what do you mean by "froot loops" ? Crazy people? I thought crazies were part of the "character" that you liked about gritty neighborhoods...

Everyone will say Brownsville or East New York are the worst neighborhoods in New York. Crime is high there but these neighborhoods have improved by leaps and bounds since the bad days of the 1980s crack epidemic. These areas are still bad compared to the rest of the city but they are gradually improving and their is a new sense of hope that hasnt been there in years. With patience and the continued hard work of the neighborhood people the area will turn around.

Tribeca is the worst. They steal from you legally there.

What about ghetto areas that are far and isolated? To me that's the deadly combo.
That's why places like Far Rock, East New York, and the ghetto areas of SI take the cake for me. No offense but people from these areas take ghetto to new artforms, lol.
Also some of the most ghetto people I've met in my life have come from Jersey, Upstate, Connecticut, Philly, and LI.
NYC is getting better all over the place. Fordham is getting a Walgreens. Lol. Come on now.

I live just north of Mott Haven. It's not that rough anymore. I'm not saying it's not rough at all, but there are some really lovely things about the area. (Community gardens, I was just at this festival where they gave away free Garlic grown right in the Bronx.) Due to it's AWFUL reputation you end up getting a much better value when you buy there. And it's so damn close to the city-- it has some nice places to eat and relax.
I can't say where the worst area in the city is... but I think that anyplace with bad subway access is not a good idea. You need to be on the trains.

In general what is occuring, in my opinion, and what futurebird has stated, is that the areas that are improving the least, or will likely not improve as much, are those lacking the easy, convenient access to trains, as well as those far from the city. I certianly think Mott Haven is a prime contender for worst neighborhood in NYC, but I cannot say for sure that it is the worst...it is definitely top 10 though...along with East NY, Brownsville, Bed-Stuy, Far Rockaway, Hunts Point, Mount Eden/University Heights, East Harlem, and possibly Soundview, although I think Soundview has very different areas that are suburban, leafy, and clean versus the projects/tenements area.
