SoHo, the Village, Central Park West, and the Upper East Side tend to be locales where many celebrities maintain residences. Many like NYC because of the anonymity, since New Yorkers generally don't notice or go out of their way to recognize a celebrity as they do in other areas of the country.
Celebrities generally are left completely alone in NYC - one reason they like it.
I remember seeing Roy Scheider at the dry cleaners, picking up a suit; Dustin Hoffman walking down Madison as a friend and I were walking up....
Sigourney Weaver lives around the corner and I see her walking her dogs all the time. Charles Osgood (not a celebrity, but not anonymous, either) was our next door neighbor when I was growing up and Matt Lauer used to live across the street.
It's the "I don't really care who you are" attitude of New Yorkers that those in the public spotlight appreciate. And they tend to be low key, themselves.
One of my best friends in high school was the neice of a very famous movie actor - she even had the same last name - and I had no idea until she showed me a family album who her uncle was. Similarly, two girls in my class each had one parent who was an internationally known film star. But you'd never know it. It's a very New York thing.
i have no clue but I do know Ugly Betty lives in the village
