Cali People..
im curious what Cali people think of NYC, from a new yorkers point of view. meaning how does a new yorker percieve a Cali person to percieve us if that makes any sense. growing up i always thought they envied us and wished they could live here in the center of the universe...

many calis do envy yorkers but it works the other way too. cali has great weather, has a laid back style, hollywood gawkers have a field day there, etc. but many yorkers also percieve cali as a cultural wasteland and believe that calis envy the big apple for its opposite.
now this isn't at all my own take just what i've observed others to think.
(glossary: cali = californians; yorkers = new yorkers. small caps = laid back cali style.)

I'm a native NY'er who envies the Cali lifestyle. Yes, I love the culture of NYC but I'd much rather live on the beach.
Besides I think San Francisco has culture, so one could always travel there or come back to NYC to visit.

That's a good assessment, although the place where Californians seem to lose their laid back style is on the freeway.

Indeed! No wonder Hollywood's located out there! In the old days, it was John Wayne on his pony chasing the bad guys on their ponies; now it's the cops going top speed after the hoodlums going top speed while everybody else is already at top speed heading wherever. No wonder nobody ever catches up with anybody since they're all going 100 m.p.h. It's like at a ballgame, if everybody stands up, what's the point?

LOL...so true. Although, CA freeway drivers may be fast, most do practice good lane discipline, but woe to you if you slow down! The distances are vast, though, that most people cover, hence the propensity to speed. It's interesting sometimes when one views the traffic reports, since some detail average speeds and it's hilarious to see the average hovering around 72-75mph when it's a 65mph zone.
But, the freeway chases are the original reality TV as I have seen professional offices gind to a standstill while everyone floods the conference rooms or brings up feeds on their computer screens to watch the chases.
Perhaps that's another reason some like NY since the freeway chase phenomenon is not the same and it's actually a little easier to drive, even on the highways.
The funniest thing, though, is that everything is "about 20 minutes" away in the estimation of many of my CA native friends.

I always got the impression that WE envied THEM because WE have to deal with snow and stuff.
I really hate how they pronounce long O and U though, as in movie and nose. Makes my skin crawl. Listen to teenage characters on the Disney Channel--it's all over the place and irritating as crap. I tried explaining it to my ex who grew up in Cali and had that speech quality, but I can't even imitate it. Fair game, when she tried to make me "pronounce the R" rhotically in her last name and my tongue clicked against the bottom of my mouth audibly, she made fun of me to no end.

I don't envy them, and I don't care if they envy me. I care about getting to work on time with no tourists in my way. I was late to work last Friday thanks to a tourist in a minivan holding me up.

Having been born in Cali but basically grew up on Long Island I'd have to say that the two are completely different and each area envies the other for what each one lacks. I know here in Cali I miss the snow and the best pizza in the world, and in NY I miss the good beaches and the laid back attitude.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the laid back attitude?
