Actually, the recommendations have more to do with housing, since it's easier to find accommodation from individual landlords in these areas, some of whom are more willing to take a chance on a fellow countryman who doesn't have 40x income proof; and, in the event of a share, it's easier in these areas as well since there is a large contingent of Irish and Irish-Americans who might be seeking roommates.

I wonder how he would begin looking? Would those apts/shares be advertised on Craigslist?

(Just trying to help out a fellow Irish - but I don't live in NYC - yet!)
