I guess you're right. I just miss the times when Ridgewood was still the exclusive ethnic old-line "Reagan belt" neighborhood. It was much less seedy and the inhabitants were close-knit. I feel that 'vibe' slipping away.
There is still a large Eastern European presence in Ridgewood. However it seems the general rule of thumb is the further you're away from Bushwick the nicer it gets and the closer not so nice.
I happened to have the lovely pleasure to drive from Midtown Manhatten to -Saint Johns Road. Well, needless to say it was not a pleasant ride. I had to make so many turns, the trip was so long, I was just asking to myself why on earth would anyone want to live so far from the city?!??!
I passed many cars with 20'' rims, blasting spanish music. I must have been the only one speaking english while walking down the many blocks away I had to find a spot for. It was so depressing. I for one am not impressed and would never ever live there or recommend anyone to this area. Homes bunched up like sardines, streets so small ants could barely get through, not the best people walking around, and you can never tell you are living in the usa with all the spanish being spoken.
IIm guessing St Johns road is closer to the dreaded 'bushwick' area? I used to live in Jersey city and this place gave me the same bad vibes...
Ridgewood is not that far from Manhattan, it borders Williamsburg. Don't know what route you took.
Ridgewood is still a nice place to live...depending...

I grew up in Ridgewood. The trick is...what part of Ridgewood you go to. Having had to commute with the M train especially on the weekends I have to say it's the only thing I don't miss...like the others I have to say that is one of the pet peeves I have on the neighborhood.
Officer Rodney Lewis shot by ex-con in Ridgewood, Queens; With another NYPD officer, he struggled with Edwin Santana who was convicted of manslaughter in 1991 and is wanted on a current parole violation. The .32 weapon was knocked loose, and a single round was discharged when it hit the pavement, striking Lewis under his left arm at a home along Menahan St. in Ridgewood around 5 a.m, July 26. The circumstances however, get bizarre. This based on a youtube clip saw it briefly on the news but didn't see the full details. The clip is a bit scratchy but u could see Menahan St. and what looks to be seneca ave. on the video.
I lived in Glendale (near Ridgewood) for a year some years back and used to take the M train from the Fresh Pond Rd. stop. Although I had switch to & from the L or J trains at nights (as M train at night runs like shuttle train), it wasn't too bad. During the day it was nice to get on a train that wasn't too overcrowded during the rush hours. Glendale itself was very nice and more European style (as it used to be a German neighborhood many years) than Ridgewood. Walking along Myrtle Avenue gives one a sense of the area/s.
Live in Ridgewood presently... Near Bleecker and Forest. It's ok but a lot of loitering on stoops at night... Love my yard and patio, lots of pools around by my house... Neighborhood changing and I would not raise a family here...
We are relocating to Suburban Atlanta within a few months...
where are u talking about??? i live not too far off from there myself and i pass by that block every day and i don't see any pools. this is not a neighborhood like that. And what makes this neighborhood the sort that you wouldn't want to raise a family in? Just asking.

My neighbors all have swimming pools on that block. I did not say I was on either Bleecker or Forest... I'm in Butler... I've lived there for just about my entire life...
I would not want to raise a family here because of cost of living and quality of life... That applies to all of New York City, in my opinion.
