Like I mentioned in an earlier post the closer you are towards the border the more sketchy it gets and the further away the nicer it gets.

That's true. I like the way this article mentions. Even though it's a little old I think that this quote still holds pretty true today: "Ridgewood is generally a safe neighborhood, though areas on the Bushwick border and industrial areas on the western side are best avoided at night or when alone. Even the main drags can seem tough on a late night." I'm sure most have seen this article already and although most of it is pretty accurate, its a little bit outdated. It mentions that Ridgewood is mainly Eastern European and Latin American but I think a new look at the neighborhood would show that it's a little more diverse than that. There are alot of hispanics in and moving into the area, there's a strong Eastern and Southern European presence, alot of Arabs and filipinos as well as a growing number of black people moving into the area. Hope the diversity continues.

Growing up in Bushwick, we always saw Ridgewood as the beginning of the safe neighborhoods. We even went up there to play basketball at the parks up there because out neighborhood parks were primarily used for drug dealing. As i got older I came to understand that it was a nicer neighborhood b/c there is a severe rent increase when you cross that Wycoff border.
For all intents and purposes Ridgewood is a good area to live in, but anyone who is considering moving there that is not familiar with the neighborhood should understand that you will have some contact at times with hood folks b/c Ridgewood runs on that Bushwick border.

Ridgewood is ideal for singles or married couples without kids. I grew up there, and while it's not all that bad today as compared to the late 80's early 90's, it's still somewhat sketchy at night depending on where you are. Lot's of property crime like car break-ins and burglaries. Street crime like robberies or becoming more common as of late.

At jacktravern I disagree. I live in the area and there's alot of affordable apartments that are just as cheap and in alot of cases cheaper than in Bushwick. I can say this because I have alot of friends in Bushwick that pay more than people in Ridgewood pay. There's no distinct border on wyckoff that makes the prices go from 1000 in Bushwick to 1500 in one block, it doesnt work that way. Ohh and also I do agree with you in the fact that Bushwick is more dangerous than Ridgewood but as a person living in the area and has seen many things happen, its not just the people in Bushwick that come down to Ridgewood that cause problems, it's the people living here as well. and again im not trying to make my neighborhood look bad but these types of problems are gonna happen in a working class neighborhood where not everyone is loaded. It doesn't take away though, from the good things about Ridgewood like I mentioned before, with the diversity, affordable rents for the most part, and old-world feel that some people have mentioned before in earlier posts.

ANON all I have to say is that if someone is paying more to live in Bushwick than Ridgewood, then they are straight up getting ripped off. But that work GENTRIFICATION I see is really sucking in a lot of people. Just based off of my life experiences, i would suggest someone move to Ridgewood b4 Bushwick

I'm wondering if you still live in the area or just come to visit every once in awhile. Gentrification is definitely taking place in Bushwick. Alot of nice new condos on Wyckoff and Bushwick Ave. have brought more diversity to the area and maybe that's the reason for the spike in the rent. I think that you're putting too much focus on the people that live in the area. Granted the neighborhood isn't the best but as a former native of East NY, Brooklyn I can tell you, there are worse parts in NY. So for the area, the rents aren't really that bad compared to other neighborhoods in NYC and that goes for Ridgewood as well as Bushwick.
